I have noisy bearings in 3rd & 5th in the gearbox and was going to take it out for rebuild in a few weeks, but the TC lower output seal started leaking badly last week, great fun pulling up to refuel and there's smoke wafting up from under the Vit, so I thought might as well get it all out now.
After a big day, I have the gearbox/TC sitting on the ground under the Vit and was wondering is it worth splitting the TC off the gearbox and just doing the seals in the TC for now cos it was otherwise working OK, and get the main gearbox rebuilt by someone who knows about gearboxes, or am I wasting time by trying to save some money now? (I wouldn't be concerned about rebuilding the TC in 18 months or so if it came to that).
Clutch wasn't too bad either but I will get flywheel machined and a new clutch.

Also having read the excellent post about transfer gear installation in Vit TC I would be comfortable having a go at rebuilding the TC at home either while the main gearbox was being rebuilt, or some time in the future, which is another option.

Another question, while flywheel is off is it worth doing the rear main seal, while it doesn't seem to be leaking, it is nearly 18 years old?

Just my opinion, but since you have the gearbox and transfer out it would make sense to do everything you can now get access to, just so it saves you pulling it all out again.

I'd definitely do the rear main and clutch/flywheel.

Thanks Dark Horse, I'll look at getting everything done in one hit then.
