Hi all,
just bought a coily, its stock as stock can be,
and i wanted to do it up.
im thinking of only going light offroad driving once every odd 2 weeks on the w/e apart from that it will be used for transport around the city everyday so what kind of tyres and supension quality would i be after roadwise driving? im after bigger ones, say 30 to 31 inches preferably on the same stock chrome rims that i have now (the 15" sj80 rims)
and i know ill have to lift it, so i want to get a suspension lift but they are extremely expensive for the coilys
so whats the cheapest anyone has heard of? im on a really right budget even old springs would do.. considering im doing mainly city driving
definitely getting new flares, probably bushwhackers so i have better clearance, and if i do need a body lift, ill get a body kit off just_cruzin cause everyone is talking about it.
most of the stuff i've read about is for the wt and nt sierras so im having trouble finding info on people in my situation

cheapest lift you can do is a bodylift, forget your bushwaker flairs and spend the money on a quality suspension lift.

2 inch suspension, 2 inch body lift, transfer gears in wt transfer case, rubber flares, you will need different rims,
thats the easiest way to get 31's on a coily...
look at my build to get an idea of the crap you have to do if you go over 2 inch springs

i'd be after just a 2 inch suspension lift, what would anyone recommend budgetwise?
i'd get the flares later and i can get them cheap for about 400.
so there is no way i can use the stock rims i have?

the eBay lift seems to be the go... pretty cheap, otherwise you will have to look into options for extended front struts, rear shocks are easy, just a measure job, and springs there are a few manufacturers.
the reason they are so hard to find is manufacturers had alot of issues with damage over a 50mm lift.
BUT the best place to get info is to check out everyone's builds,

stock rims are only 5.5 inch wide you can't really fit 31's on them, they are too narrow, you need a 7 inch rim for 10.5 wide tyre i think...

dont bother with bushwhackers save the money for gears and a wt transfer case. you will need these for anything bigger then 28s.
defiantly reinforce the front strut towers if you do a suspension lift.
p.s. i have 5 15x7 rims for sale if your interested?

how would i reinforce the front strut towers if i did a lift?
i'd be after a 50mm lift no more than that so minimal installation/work on most parts
sweet, what are the rims like got a topic up?

best way to reinforce the strut towers is to weld a fat washer to support the hole the strut mounts in at the top

You'll need a two inch spring lift and a two inch bodylift to fit 31's under the guards, not to mention some massaging of the gaurds. Living in Brisbane you'll prbably need to get it engineered or you're leaving yourself open to get pinged by the police.
Also if you are using at as a daily driver, you'll need to do the transfer case gears if you plan on running 30's or 31's on it.
If you are looking at gaining some offroad ability on a budget I'd go a 2" spring lift, some all terrain tyres no bigger than 15mm over the standard tyres. And then when you have a bit more cash, some double tuff heavy duty front axles (if they are available for coilys) and air lockers front and rear. These mods will give you a little beast that drive well onroad and is near unstoppable off road, and should be 100% legal in Queensland.

Hey mate, i got 29's on mine now and my gearing is fine.
But to got to 30's or 31's you'll need lower gearing.
Cheap option would be to just get a 1litre transfer case and put that in,(lower gearing than the 1.3) alot of people complaing about the coily transfer any way so you might want to change that
You will need a 2inch body lift to fit 31's. A 2inch suspension lift will make it look like you have enoguh room but they will scrub alot.
i would save money and go for 2inch suspension and body lift, 31's lower gearing and front and rear air lockers. would go just about any where then.

Why don't you just start with 235's on the standard rims with a 2" suspension lift. If it is mostly for city driving with some off road then this is the best compromise IMO. 31's will attract the wrong attention and it won't be that comfortable to drive. There is still a good range of tyres in the 235 size so that's not an issue.
If you want 31's you will need 8" rims, 30's will fit on 7's.

you cant get an airlocker for the front of a coily unless you modify one from a jimny to fit, will be really expensive.
you can get a locker for the rear.
1" tyres and a 2" lift is all that is legal in qld.
i dont know if they make strengthened front axles and cvs for the coilys, but you wont need that unless you are going to be running 33s +

according to the modifcations books it is only 15mm larger. ie one tyre size larger in the metric tyres.

There are ways. IE lots of money to build an ICV and meet ADRs.
So basically no there is no way around it. But that being said. I run 30s every day and have never been picked up. i also run 33s for play and have never been picked up. My next project will run hopefully 36+ but non of this is legal. In an accident your insurance aint worth shit, and your could be up for criminal charges ive been told.

No. Biggest legal increase in tyre size is 15mm in overall diameter.... which equates to nothing!! It allows for discrepancies in manufacturing. The biggest thing is insurance, you will be found at fault as insurance companies will find any way to get out of paying.
Having said that, I run 31's for off roading and standard size for everyday use, so it can be done, just gotta be smart. I don't believe it's worth the risk but that's your decision. Plenty of people do and 'get away' with it, you need to make that decision for you. We're just here to inform you of legalities etc.

NSW has the same law (15mm in total diameter), but it's not strictly enforced yet. I think this may change with the introduction of vsi50, but we'll have to wait and see.
Scrawn is 100% correct about insurance companies. At the end of the day they will try and find any little descrepances so as not to have to pay you. Having said that I'm running 31's. Granted it's not a daily driver, but if I ever need to make a claim, the standard wheels are going back on.

i ran into a van recently, i have third party fire and theft. there was no damage to my car but like $5000 to the van, they did not even ask to see or give a crap at all about my car and the claim was went through fine. I think comprehensive may be different.

i had a 2" lift and 28s and used to scrub badly and had no flex.
you will need to cut your guards or get a body lift to fit 29-30s

I have a 2" body lift and 30"BFG Muds under my coily. My rims are 15x8 witha -28 offset so that might make a difference.
The rear clears them no worries but the fronts scrub a bit. I took to the bits that stick out under the guards with a hammer and drives fine on road clears lock to lock no worries. Still scrubs a bit offroad, have some coil spacers on the way so hope that might help a bit.
