I am looking into getting the XL-7 lifted. Most kits I have seen have been between 25mm and 40mm. I am considering a Dobinson 40mm lift kit as Tough Dog is too much money..
What exactly are the benefits to a 40mm lift ?

Well... On the weekend on a mild track I bottomed out a little.. So If a 40mm Lift will assist I am all for it.. Bash plates helped me glide over the mud instead of shovelling into it.. I also hope to eliminate the XL-7's loose feeling rear end..

40mm is going to help a little obviously. its going to help clear things 40mm higher.

The lift will help a little in the front half of the car, but rear diff pumpkin will still be there in the same place unless bigger tyres are fitted. As has been mentioned before if your still running the original springs, it will lift it slightly more as the originals wouldve sagged somewhat and the on road handling is generally better with a firmer aftermarket spring. When I bought mine and drove it home through the hills it was wallowing all over the shop. New springs, struts and shocks stopped that. Although I've recently gained a little body roll with the removal of the sway bar.

i think the extra weight & length also doesn't help, my LWB with the exact same set up handles like a bag of dicks in the twisty stuff compared to my SWB.

Main thing with the XL-7 is ramp over clearance, need a balance between tire size and suspension lift. Check your rear trailing arm and panrod bushes if your rear end is handling weird. Stiffer springs like dobs or kings does help a bit. So do you still have the standard springs in? Im putting mines through a engineer and need the standard height from ground to center lip of wheel arch on front and rear. got it from your thread but according to the difference i have 6.5" lift in rear which just cant be correct Depending on mods it shouldn't cost me a arm and a leg either.

You been done for mods? Why would you put it through an engineer unless you had to? I've passed yours on port road not long ago and unless you've huge mods since then yours looks stock as a rock. If it looked like Klutched's gv then I would worry about it.

Nah havent been, but just looked into it at moment front is pretty much stock cause of winch its only 12mm higher, rear is 47mm.
Im just looking at it as peace of mind esp insurance wise and just something to shove in peoples face if they question it, which some have. if it was over a grand i wouldn't bother, but since its less im looking at the options.
I can either stick with 2" lift and a extra inch in tire height, or go down to 1 inch lift and 1 inch tire height and just get a placard made up which is a much easier and cheaper option just as long as the tires don't rub.

So I am guessing 40mm should be enough for me to fit larger diametre tyres to raise the diff ?

Yep at that height I had no issues with 235 70 r16. But 225 75 r16 seems to be pretty good.

I told the insurance company the XL7 is lifted and they said i can have any size tyre i want as long as i have the factory rims on it, so i signed up i have been out at the glass house mountains a few times with friends that had XL7s too and the amount of scrapping that was done over mounds was annoying, now with the lift and tyres on mine it has been fine but if i pushed im sure i could get it to scrap again lol.

Well I have booked it in to get a 40mm lift.. should help against bottoming out. I mean I love the space but you cannot have an offroad machine with a long wheel base without the inevitable poor ramp over.. So it should help a little..

Mine handled better instantly with the lift. Just make sure you get a wheel alignment done and then checked again maybe about 500klms or so afterwards. I wish I had of as wouldn't be looking at two just about destroyed front tyres. Appears either wasn't done after fit up or extra weight of bullbar and winch combined with natural settling of springs completely screwed with with it.
