Ok so i have been building up ideas for a camper trailer for a while!
a few weeks ago i picked up a oztrail Camper6 tent and the designs were set in concrete.
Image
however yesterday i picked up this butey for $200 with 3 months rego!
Image
it has a nice angle frame! randomly a Drop axel! but most of all rego!
so we took to it with the rattle gun and recipro saw
Image
Image
Image
Image

so from here...
New axle with suzuki hubs etc with a flat axel it should sit around perfect height behind the jimny
narrow the frame in a bit.. not a huge amount but enough to clear the tires etc.
build the frame in to a box set up for the camper to sit on top.
from there i will build the rest of the trailer, the inside will be set up with checker sides and a ally floor, all riveted/sikaflexed in
the sides of the trailer will have jerry can holders/gas bottle holder. tail gate will have a kitchen on it etc

i just ordered a new treg hitch, jocky wheel set up (but with a big stable plate style foot) and some other bits and pieces! id like to see it usable buy this weekend! time will tell!

all for now!
Phil

so i got the box started yesterday. its all 50x50x5 angel. it isnt heavy as such but its not light! the flooring will be 2mm ally plate and the sides will be 1.6 propela plate "bling"
axel, tacked up atm but is same width as a jimny rear diff
Image

base of the box, its 1000x1700 and 500 high
Image
Image

and the reason for the hight
Image
it will take 3x jerry cans and one gas bottle on the sides!

The tent will hang over the sides of the box buy exactly250mm a side and the outer edge of the tires will be just past that! so pretty much spot on i think!
more to come, once i have been to the steel shop and when its more than 3' outside!

Draw bar, springs and rego plates ;)
according to transport tas, you can modify a trailer how ever u like, as long as the drabar is not touched its the same trailer!
i had intended to use much more of it but it was 2 fucked!
speeking of that! im about to go cut more of it up! :)

didnt get anywhere near as much done today as i had hoped! but here it is!
the springs bolts are WELL seezed into the springs on the the old trailer!
so zook fronts will be the GO
i did cut the draw bar off tho! need to remove the old bit of angle! this trailer will be quite a deal longer than the old one! the draw bar is about 400mm further forward to make it tow a bit better.
my axel placement will be in the center, due to the over hang at the front from the camper tent!
Image

more to come!

is there a "chassis" number on the original drawbar hence your reason for re-using it?

there are some handy links in the trailer mega merge thread about legal axle placement, i think you'll be right with what you've got planned.

i'll try & dig them up.

EDIT: what do you know.... the search works 8O :thefinger:

you would think this but nope!
there is no chassis number on this trailer! or my bigger one that i tow richy in
in tassie (probably the rest of aus 2) old 80's trailers didn't ever need a Vin number and buy transports rules if it passed ADR's back then it does now! basically!
im keeping all the pics of the build in case i ever run into trouble tho!

Need more pics... or progress

In Qld the older the trailer the less you have to do to comply, sort of like re-registering a Model T, Air bags ABS etc weren't part of the originally approved spec so no need to update.

I would have just scrapped the draw bar it it didn't have any identifying marks

It dosnt! but if i ever have any issues i can just give them these pics..
there has been VERY little progress. been flat out painting the jimny and getting ready for a house inspection next week!
however i picked up..
a set of near new 205/70r15's on sierra rims, some 2inch lifted fronts, shackles etc from jazzors place
and these arrived in the post
Image

over the moon with the quality of them considering the price!! be a week or 2 before i can get much done! i will be putting the olive jimny back together tomorow and then i need to get my sierra prepped for a hard core trip in 2 weeks! then its trailer time!

is there an option to attach a wheel to the jocky stand? i reckon you'll find it handy to wheel the thing around with.

Nah it's a solid leg. I like it that way IMO I never find jocky wheels all that handy! Time will tell! Considering getting 2 more for rear balancing legs!

Could you please send me a link for that jockey wheel without the wheel lol. It might work for my rear stabilisers.

Lightweight parts???
Yeah reeceh as soon as I get home!

Also going to run 40x40 angle on the underside of the drawbar to beef it up a bit. The span on the bar is now a fair bit longer than it was so it could use the extra strength IMO

Try not to overlap the drawbar angle with your bracing angle. This promotes rust. Most of the trailers that I have repaired (with angle drawbars) had been bent at some point, then either laminated or closed out with more angle. What a fucking mess!

IMO if you think the drawbar is not strong enough, replace it with RHS.
