I'm in the process on modding a coily tank to fit my sierra ute. My concern is that it will go kaboom when I start welding. The tank has been sitting dry for about a year and I have flushed it with water 6 times. Has anyone done this or got any tips?

I'd weld to that.

Pending if you have argon gas with your welder, you could fill the tank with argon gas. That would create an awesome environment for welding too.

Why does the tank need to be modded?

Why not mod the mounts and filler location instead?

That could be an option . I was planing on capping the coily filler hole and cutting a new hole where the ute filler is. The tank will have to be moved back a fair bit to fit an elbow on the coily filler hole

Well in any case, that tank will be fine to weld.

I did this about 3years ago.


Just fill it with water, then I welded it, dried as good as possible, full tank of fuel and a cup of metho. Never had a drama.

PS: at the time I was a 2nd year apprentice, leave my welds alone.

I've done it a few times, filled it to overflowing, empty the water out, connected a hose to the exhaust of the (diesel) Landrover to purge the fumes with carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide or whatever that crappy air coming out the tailpipe is. for 10 minutes or so at idle.
To make sure I attached a rag to a long stick and lit it and stood back while I waved it around the openings.

When I lived in S.A there was a faint boom one day, a guy 8kms away had transferred himself onto the wall of his shed trying to weld his boats fuel tank.

Edit: Also, at school we had half a dozen series land rovers to "fix up". One stoner kid went around with a can of deodorant and a lighter kill the all wasps and burn the nests in them. On one there was no fuel filler cap and there was a wasp nest on the edge of the filler hole.... He lost his eyebrows and a bit of hair but other than that he was alright. Teacher had a bit of a freak out though.

Again at school, for autos we wound up with this photography teacher because our proper teacher went on long service leave. Some year 10s were welding a go kart together, on the bench they were welding on there was a GX160 copy engine with no cap on the fuel tank. I pointed this out to them and moved the motor. When I pointed this out to the teacher he said "oh, did it have any fuel in it?".

make sure you have a camera set up just in case. The guys in the bike shop I worked in for a while used to do it the same way. Was all fun and games until they had one go pop and had it blow up like a balloon. The panel beater wasn't happy as it fucked the shape of the tank.
