I'm still using my $25 Kmart air compressor that I have had for around 30 years now.
Slowly things have rattled off, switches have been bypassed,
all its add on accessories and lights don't work, or fell off,
and now it can't get passed 22psi.
Not really a problem till I tried to pump up the pushy's tyres :)
It is getting slow and smelly now, hence why I am here researching tyre pumping things.
Mostly I just drive carefully to next servo and pump tyres there,
but with a few more sand trips, and longer trips in my future, thinking its time for a better inflator.
A balance between the best, and what I can afford.
Therefore not the best, but the best I can afford.

Intended use is touring, trailer and car for 30's.
Occassional weekends.

And the pushy

Be careful of paying too much.
I bought a big expensive pump last time home, the little cheapy I had took too long to air up 33 x 12.5s, well it was ok, but I spoilt yself.

Cant remember the brand, only had it two days and it shit itself, $500 pump, first tyre, sweet and fast, second, triped out once, third tyre tripped out 2, second couldnt get it going.

That was to 18psi.

Big single cylinder job, my storm or typhone whatever, has lasted many years now, pumped countless tyres, cost $100.

oh well, see what transpire when I get home and what they have found wrong with the newy.

Have one but its solid mounted, need a mobile one.

When I get to put my diffs under Itsa (with airlocker)s, she will carry the arb air pump

i got a "P.O.S" KCI air compressor from 4wd action and it takes about 5 mins per tyre 33" from 12psi to 24psi and wont inflate past it i try to air up at the servo as much as possible when there is one close and only use my kci when i have to i like the look of the new WARN compressor and might get 1 later on ;)
At 0 PSI the compressor will pump 566 l/min. At 90 PSI it will still punch out 226 l/min.
the Warn was able to inflate the 33 from an aired-down 15 PSI to 30 PSI in just 50 seconds!

So I'm about to spend $304.50 of my $500 ARB voucher on an ARB CKMA12 compressor this week:

http://www.arb.com.au/products/arb-air-compressors/

anyone want to talk me out of it?

Couldn't tell you, you'll have to start a massive email hunt.

Considering they cost ~$1k, I'd be inclined to get an arb twin at half the cost. If that's still not fast enough run two of them into a tank.

Easier to have a 120CF dive bottle and a hose, fill a tyre in seconds. Prob do a dozen tyres between refills, maybe more.

google tells me a 120CF is roughly, 744mm tall x 183mm round which is HUGE & still wont pump up your tyres when empty unlike a compressor... can't imagine too many of us have access to easily refill them either & never realised airing up was a race.

will have to practice my pitstops. Armsup

Was just looking at them $99 ones last night.
There are some $49, too, but at a quick glace, the 99's look better.
Likely to be used only once a month anyway.
Not sure on the higher output ones that draw 45amps on a Vit alternator,
may just be satisfied with a 30 amp draw at slower air up rate.
Though I doubt they draw that much constantly, and my tyres are only tiny.
Have to wait for a bill-less pension day, then will decide.

The twins draw a bit. Mine melted the inline fuse holder.
if u mount it and put a small tank it will help if u need to put a bead back on

That inspires confidence
Had some spotties do that once, answer was a ceramic fuse holder.
Thank goodness some things are a little better these days.

easiest way to reset the bead is to jack the wheel off the ground run a ratchet strap round the tyre dia and a little bit of start u bastard and a lighter there will be a small poof then on with the compressor to pump some air in before the air in the tyre cools and contracts ;)

I use a ratchet strap round tyre when needed, haven't needed any poof as yet,
but never needed to reseat anything real big. Have needed a bit of lube on occasion.
For tyre reseating as well. ;)

Compresser purchase on hold, now, just bid on a disc of Hema maps for the gps.
I allow myself occasional impulse buys :)
Won't be long before they cheaper than paper maps.

I have one of these^ and an ARB compressor, the $89 compressor is only slightly faster inflating my tyres.

Build quality is a little to be desired, if you pulled it apart, loctite it all together it will last. Mines been going for 2-3years now no drama.

i got a mean mother one from my local toyota as my old one burnt out at short notice before a trip doing the boat tyres.
im happy with it, came with enough hose to be fitted in a box behind the passenger seet and still reach all 4 car wheels and both trailer wheels from straight out the back door of the jim. i haven't had it cut out on me yet going from 8psi back up to 26 on 4 30x9.5's.

might not be the cheapest or the best but i wouldnt count it out, im happy with it.

as an example i've aired up 6x 31's (zook & trailer) from 12psi to 28psi , 4x 235x75r15 & 4x 35's (unsure of the pressures as they were mates cars but the 35's take a while due to the size) with my ARB compressor all in one go & it didn't cut out... would like to see a cheap china one do that on a regular basis with out throwing in the towel.

Agreed, I only use it at home when I'm in a hurry for whatever reason. But, any SCUBA joint will fill them up.

no i have not but i have seen plenty of videos where the idiots put half a can in there and blow the tyre clean off the rim
only need a 1 second spray or less and a line down ot the edge of the tyre to light it safely if the fluid catches on fire instead of the desired explosion just kick the sidewall and whoosh (just done get your toe's caught in the bead ;) )

iv only done it with a 35" bias ply tyre and have had no issues maybe its the smaller tyres u have problems with?

As the pressure in the tire increases so does the amp draw, a larger tire would have it drawing more amps for longer periods - even with that I don't see the current draw being an issue as long as the battery is healthy - you'll only be pulling the full 30/45 amps for a few minutes, followed by a few more minutes of no draw/low draw as you move the compressor to the next tire and so on - my problem was melting the fuse (not blowing it, just melting the plastic).

winches draw a lot more then 45A. i dont even start the car to use the compressor. if the battery died from using a compressor for 5 minutes i think that would indicate bigger problems elsewhere

I would run the car whilst using a compressor, primarily to up the voltage and therefore speed the compressor up.

My compressor draws 70A at peak, but not for very long in each inflation cycle. Generally my alternator can keep up. I fill my tank with he car in motion so I'm not doing that at idle.

Engine driven compressors need elevated revs to produce their rated output too, so that's not really any different.
