So I have a 2013 Suzuki Jimny with about 3,000km on the clock...

I've been trying to nurse it whilst driving to try and "break in" the engine, but to be honest I don't really know what I'm doing.

I've got some advice that I should try and keep the revs down, don't dump the clutch at the lights etc etc until after my first service.

The reason I ask is because I used to drive a G16B Vitara (89 Carb) and the powerband was always >4,000rpm, something I'm hestitant to hit in my new shiny car haha

So aside from the obviously spot on advice above, what else should I be mindful of for the first few months of my engine? Or am I being overly precausious?

They are pre-broken at the factory. Drive it for day 1 how you intend to drive it for the next few years.

I got a coil sierra new of the show room floor and drive it at 115 down the free way for 20 mins to get home, always drove it with some intent and the engine just seemed to work better than others.

Regardless, by 3k you won't be able to infuence anything anyway- just drive it.

If I get a spanker, I'll avoid lugging the engine, extended full throttle, or constant rev cruising (as in for long periods) for the first 1k or so, but I don't limit revs.

I remember reading the running in procedure for the e46 BMW m3. It was very proscriptive and detailed. ( forged motor though afaik. They certainly rattle like forgies when they are cold)

I picked my new jimny up at the dealers and drove the next 300km at 130kph. Didn't seem to hurt it.

Keeping revs lower labours up the engine more than at revs, brand new they say to drive them how u wnt them to run, I had a brand new Hilux and got into it and believe it or not mine revved and ran better than my mates new one after he laboured and babied his.

AFAIK, labouring (as in lugging) an engine is about the worst possible thing you could do whilst running in.
