Has the new suspension increased ride height? If my understanding of LJ steering is correct, suspension lift will increase toe in, and additionally, it will increase bump steer and the amount that the two wheels can move independently before their motion is checked by the steering box/your arms.
Just a guess, but I do think that any increased ride height might allow wobble to increase.
Can't comment on the brakes.
Steve.

You are correct Steve! It's only an inch or 2 taller than it would have been when new but it'd make a difference. It's got flexxy bushes too which probably don't help. The bump steer is pretty ridiculous, luckily bar treads don't promote sudden changes in direction. Doesn't matter anyway, Sierra swivel hub conversion and Sierra steering arms are going in sometime in the next few weeks.

Woot. Upgraded to 3" springs and shocks all round. No more wobble for me for now. Unnecessary castor correction is very bad I must say. Expecially with 30x9.5's and -15 mm offset rims.

Rob` wrote: I've got a 2012 Jimny with the facelift, I had no issues with wobbles at all ... until I fitted mud tyres. I just got a set of Maxxis MT-753 mud tyres put on last week and between 60 and 75km/h it gets the wobble. I have a steering damper ready to install to see if that will fix it, so fingers crossed that works.
My mate also has a 2008 Jimny with the same tyres as me and he had the same issues, fitted a steering damper (Pro-comp one from Jimny Bits if anyone is interested) and the problem is all but gone.
I'll report back once mine is fitted, but I'm waiting for Rus @ Jimny Bits to send me the mounting bracket for it. Ok, so report time. I got the steering damper fitted to the car a couple of weeks ago and as Steve said (somewhere), it just seemed to mask the problem, not really fix it. So after I while, and a bit more research, I decided to fit SuperPro Castor Correction bushes to see if that would fix the problem. I really cannot believe the difference it made! With these and the steering damper, the shudder is almost all but gone. Pretty happy so far In other news, I went out with a group of guys a couple of weeks ago and we were discussing tyres (as you do) and most of the guys (~10) made comments about the poor "balance" of the tyres to start with. I know it seems rather general, but it seemed pretty consistent that there was an issue with the tyres? Maybe for the next set I'll get some BF Goodies A/T or M/T? Maybe that's the issue?

Would make adjusting the king pins pretty easy. I'd buy them if they weren't so expensive, plus I'd want a set of four. This item looks like only two.

Why would you need four? I'm sure you could achieve preload with one per side.

if you go by the bulletin for the wobbles they only say to shim the bottom king pins not the tops too. let me know if you want photos of them or something

Gwagensteve wrote: Why would you need four? I'm sure you could achieve preload with one per side. Jimnys are fairly loose stock, if you relied on just the lower KP for preload you'd need to put too much load on that bearing to achieve the desired result causing premature failure. Pretty sure BigJimny.com suggest top and bottom. Top and bottom works for me.

yes the bigjimny instillation guide does suggest that shims may need to be used on both the top and bottom to get the preload correct. my understanding is that with wheels on the ground, the load is on the top bearing and the play that causes wobbles should be taken out through the bottom bearing as shimming the top will effectively move the swivel hub down in the knuckle and that would be the equivalent of a slightly bent axle.
i have mine set at 3.5Kg initial torque and i still feel some minor bumping and can feel the wheel balance syncronise diagonally from one another causing a bit of a shake in the steering but it never deveops into full blown wobble anymore.

I have both top and bottom shimmed but by different amounts. I think you need to do both. These would make the process easier but at a cost.

yeh their like 200 bucks landed by themselves so a bit xey but if you sent your car to a mechanic to set up your king pins with shims you could be out that much pretty quick.

^this. I can't see the cost is that much of an issue. Throwing bearings and rebuilds at the car gets pretty old, let alone the expense if you're paying someone to do it.

got them at work to get opinions from various mechanical engineers. mostly their just wondering why they haven't seen something like this before... those who have seen similar said that the play in the thread could increase over time making it harder to adjust, but noted that the lack of play (there's no noticeable play in the thread) seams to suggest it is a unlikely problem.

Hey guys- so reading through this thread.. maybe missed a few posts but overall the jist of it is to shim up the kingpins and fit a good steering dampener?
My girlfriend has recently purchased a 2013 Jimny with a small OME lift (probably about 1.5") and standard sized yokohama geolanders. The shake is tremendous at 60-75km/h. First step is get them balanced correctly and an alignment, then I'll install the bigjimny shims. I have a Defender and I suffer the same problems at approx 90 km/h with a 2" lift and 33s...all Defenders have it. However my Range Rover with a 4" lift and 35s didn't get it?
Has anyone tried heavier steering arms? My shake decreased alot when I fitted some sold steering arms.. perhaps they might help too?
Good to be back (sorta) in the Suzuki crowd though.. missed it a bit!

1st check your panhard bolts are tight and the bushes are ok. 2nd make sure your wheels dont need balancing. Swap the wheels round and see if you still get wobble. Ut may slso change when the bobble occours
3rd kingpin preload. Steering dampners are a bad idea. Also keep in mind the jimny is not goning to ever hsndle like anything other then whst it is.

Sure, thanks mate. Will check it out. Just thought it was a little odd for an almost brand new car (13,000km on it) to have this issue. Otherwise...a really really cool little car! Makes me miss my vitara

This is not unusual. If you had original suspension Suzuki would fit the shims under warranty. You might try them just in case. I had the 70 kph vibration at 5,000 km as soon as I fitted the mud terrains. The advice from Jezza86 is spot on. Make sure they balance the wheels to 00.

My jimny had death wobble from 9000km. Because I changed things... That wobble on the coily looks like it is pretty bad. Looks like it is set off by hiting those bumps . That sugests not tyres. Your camera angle means the panhard cant be seen. If you can get a better angle you may see it moving at the same time as the tie rod/ draglink. If the panhard dosent move or shake then your kingpin bearings may be worn out

Looks like you should check the panhard bushes first and then the shim the king pin bearings or if they are original even think about replacing the bearings. It would be useful to know what speed you were doing during that video. Were you doing a constant speed and then hit the rough patch and what speed was that?

Speed was around 70-75km/hr (EDIT: wobble occurs at 60km/h and faster). Caught the the wobble on camera doing 70km/h and set off just by braking down a hill (no road imperfection). I can record other angles on my coily. *sorry for being a noob* but could someone post a diagram on the steering system/ the parts likely to cause the wobble. I am what you would call a beginner.
