Thanks for all the help and suggestions! I will look at the timing thing. The motor had sat for 12 months without running. I changed the oil and used Castrol 20w-50 which states that it is ideal for older motors???, the noise seemed to start after that. It's not a deep knock but more of a rattle, hard to describe but sounds faintly like a diesel. It's only there under load. I know the manifold to exhaust pipe gasket is buggered and leaking badly, could that be causing the noise? I have been reluctant to try to fit a new one as yet because I know the bolts/studs are rusted in an as sure as ---- they are going to break.

hear is my warning noises...
1: a high pitch squeal inly every bump is one of my front shocks is lose
2: an occasional heavy rattle is a lose body block (or the welded nut broke off???)
3: like a kkkkk that is very consistent and gets louder and louder. that means I'm up for a new front wheel bearing because the dick it scraping on the disk caliper...
4: a seriously angry kkkk means my rear wheel bearings are cactus
5:no radio you just cut through the cable cutting the guard
thats what i've figured out.

But mine is doing the same noise and it's sat for 7yrs so ill be watching this thread

sounds a little like detonation, have you checked your ignition timing?

A couple of years ago mine started making a "ticking" sound while under load. It sounded mechanical but turned out to be the manifold gasket. As soon as I changed it the noise was gone.

Otherwise people with duplicate and when the problem is solved its good to be able to look through the thread and see the diagnosis steps. Difficult to track accross several threads.

Check to see your distributor hasnt been left loose.

IF I thought it could be pinking, before I investigated further (and went to any expense) I would add some of the high octane fuel additive to the tank (or fill with premium).
Then if that didnt fix it I would mark the distributor position (scrape the metal or mark with a marker pen or something to mark current timing position) then loosen and rotate the distributor a little, tighten and try start the engine again. (move only a mm at at a time, first in one direction for a while and then in the other (I guess if it is pre-ignition (pinking) you will get better result by rotating clockwise).

(I tend to roatate the distributor whilst the engine is running, but as there is risk of shock from HT leads or even a cracked dist cap, I reckon if you are new to this proceedure that you do it the safe but slower way. Stop the car make your change then start the car.

Mine was pinging under load, low rpm high throttle

Changing to premium fuel, fixed the issue. In general the car runs much better on premium, and economy is marginally better.

I also had occasional dieseling when turning off. Checked the fuel cut off valve, didn't help, changing to premium fixed it too.

Buying 30L of premium doesnt cost much more than buying 30L of the cheapest fuel you can find.

I used my coles/shell docket 2nd last time i filled up. Filled the car and 6 jerry cans. What was worse was it was a bad batch of fuel and i had to rebuild my damn carby. Thatll teach me to try and save $5.

No Worries Makie43, just try the fuel change and iginition retarding/advancing and see if your problem goes away.

Thanks all for your interest and input. My main ride is in for some serious repairs for a week or so, so the Zuk is my only transport. I will delve further into it when I have my other car back, I'm kind of convinced that it might be coming from the leaking manifold/ exhaust pipe gasket, but I think the two bolts are rusted in so it might be a big job to fit a new on, because if they snap I will have to take it all off and drill them out. I will also do the timing and put a new timing belt on because I think the one that's on there is the original and after 160,000 km. I guess it needs one, and then if all that fails I will try premium fuel..I will keep you posted.

I ripped mine off as it was rattling at 3-4000 rpm.

Yeah! The heat shield is still on, I'll rip that off also. I think I will do one operation at a time as a process of elimination. I've been giving the studs a good soak in WD40 every other day for about a week so I hope that does help.

I took the Zook to a muffler guy yesterday and he found there was a hole in the exhaust just below where it connects to the manifold, right up against the flange. the pipe itself was in good condition so how the the 5mm. dia. hole got there is unexplained??? Put a new gasket on and now it seem a lot quieter, at least we can cruise around and listen to our Hawaiian music without wondering if it was going to drop a big end................... I still intend to check the timing etc. as soon as I get a chance.
p.s. The bloody rattle noise is still there!!! I think I will either just drive it untill it dies then worry about it OR push it off the cliff at the Lighthouse!!!!!!!!!

I thought I replied to this post this morning but I can't find it,so here goes again. When I listen to the motor when it's idling with a screwdriver there isn't any noise from down in the block, the fan end of the tappet cover is reasonably quiet but the firewall end is noisy and the loudest "rattle" seems to be coming from low down in the distributor?? it's not the sound of the rotor button turning more like a noisy/stuffed bearing??? The motor is really quiet when idling the noise comes in under load, it's worst when I first start up and the motor is cold and seems to ease off after it warms up....or maybe I just get more used to the sound....

Trying to diagnose this sort of noise by description is bloody hard.

Can't get the video loaded and I don't think it would help much anyway because of all the other engine noise, but I'm almost convinced that the noise is coming from the distributor drive. Do they give any trouble? especially where the helical drive engages with the gear on the cam shaft?? And is there a bearing at the bottom of the distributor shaft??
