I have put on 31x10.5 R15 with -13 offset rims on my 99 Jimny. Arches are trimmed, nothing hits and it has a 2inch OME kit int it.
The engineer has said that because the lift due to the wheel diameter increase puts it 6mm over the 50mm allowed that it will require a swerve test to get engineered.

The swerve test is a double lane test swerving through cones out to the other lane and back again within a prescribed distance without knocking over any cones and without any wheels lifting.

He has mentioned that many older hilux and pajeros fail it, and with the jimnys high COG it will probably have trouble as well. The test is performed at 110km/hr.

He did say that the lift because of the stiffer springs should help.

Has anyone had this test done with a similar set up and if so how did you go?

Get a different engineer.

I used Treeve in Orange for my lane change test and it passed with ease. Treeve does all testing at 80km/h which is all that the RMS requires.

On the test day he mentioned that the test used to be done fully loaded at 100km/h. Under those conditions he was able to get a fully loaded 5inch lifted Surf through after a few attempts.

Treeve is on the list of approved certifiers issued by the RMS: http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/ ... tin_01.pdf. The day I was there he had about 8 or 9 cars there being tested and most had traveled a few hundred kms at least.

If you don't mind me asking, myself and a few others down here are going down the engineering route, what sort of prices are you guys charged to do the lane change test?

I've been quoted $2000-3000 dependant on how many cars they can get on one day with no basis for comparison I'm just curious to find out what it costs others and if its reasonable.

The engineering cost me $900 (lift, tyres, wheels and 1.8 conversion) and the lane change test cost another $770 on top of that.

Fwiw Treeve is one of the more switched on engineers in NSW so worth the trip.

I reckon, i'm going to do a bit more shopping around if it comes to needing to do the test. Tim mentioned having 8-9 cars on one day which would substantially reduce the price.

Treeve does all his testing together, lane change tests, brake tests, etc and on a whole range of cars. I think he runs 1 or 2 test days each month and they are done on the runway at Cudal airport.

For allowable mods. But we can't prove that larger than allowed tyres have not effected the way the car drives and therefore gain engineering approval.
