hey guys

ok, the other day i used my vitara to do a big dump run with a trailer. got to and from the dump not worries, when i got home i reversed the trailer and un hooked it from the car. jumped in started the car and the fuel pump went crazy, it had almost a full tank so i know for sure it wasnt low on fuel.

went to bursons and brought a brand new bosch 070 and filter along with all new hose and fittings, fitted it all up. jumped into it and it started fine, went to reverse and it went nutts just like the other pump did.

it is definitly a fuel problem, any chance the pick up could be blocked? what does a vitara carby pick-up look like? how hard is it going to be to remove and clean?

any help would be great

Hey Zac does your car have the pump in the tank (original EFI) or is it external (original carby) ?

Pickup could be blocked.
I fitted a tank and drove the car for 6 months before a piece of brown paper not much bigger than a playing card decided to block the pickup.
Only place I can think it came from was the previous owner of the tank plugged up the return line with it...


So if you are reasonably sure there is something blocking the pickup, the only thing to do is remove the tank and have a look in it.

Fuel problems when tank is near full can often mean a tank breather problem, blocked, dirty or flattened pipe,
and/or a problem in the charcoal cannister.
Test that theory by running with fuel cap off, or loosened, see if it fixes it.

When fitting a new fuel pump, sometimes fuel don't prime up first time.
Not sure on correct or safe procedure, but I usually loosen nut on end of inlet manifold,
then put ign on till fuel squirts out.
Making sure no sparks or flames are around.

It could be a blockage in fuel pick up, and a dirty tank, you will have to go thru things one at a time.

it is the original carby tank running a external pump setup. just got the tank on the ground. i bloked all the hoses and gernyd it off. waiting for it to dry ill open it up then.

i was meant to be going camping for the weekend out at glendon, this problem is holding me up lol

once i get the tank back in i will loosen the line from the fuel rail and prime it that way

Just about to put the tank back in, no blockages that i could see. got me stumped, and i have just dumpef 40litres of 98

blow out the fuel lines with compresses air

I blew the lines out, i am starting to think it could be the fuel reg playing up

Crimp the vacuum line to the reg on the end of the rail. That'll give the rail full pressure
