I was talking with someone recently and they recommended putting gasket goo (sealant) under the king pin to help keep the CV/Knuckle water tight. So upon rebuilding my front end I figured I'll give it a go. Now I have the dreaded Jimny death wobble, which I never had any experience with before. Before it was tight and direct on road. So I'm going to remove the goo.

So my question is, does anyone else out there do this when they put their kingpins together?

Can't comment on a jimny, but on a sierra, yes. The FSM states that it should be done.

Same for the Jimny. I used old fachioned avaiation form a gasket but any sealant should do.

Did you set the kingpin bearing preload correctly when installing the new bearings. Same shims with new bearings does not guarantee same amount of preload.

I have never used any and never had a drama.

Jimny's from the floor don't have enough preload in the king pins, so I don't run any shims at all. With it like this I have no wobble or shimmy.

But as soon as I add a smear of goo it must take the tiniest bit of tension out of it and I get the shakes.

The only shims I've seen avaliable for jimny's is ones that go under the king pin (sit flat on the bearing increasing weight, instead of lessening the weight and collecting the 4 bolts).

i did this yesterday too! i ended up with .4mm under and .5 mm over the right hand wheel (new bearings, old cradle, because i didn't have a puller tool and couldn't get the cradle out)
still have to add shims to the passenger side to get rid of the last bits of wobble. its currently got 0.2mm under and .2mm over, going to take the .2 from the top and put it on the bottom, test drive and if i have to put a 0.5mm on the top.
im going to seal them with the gasket goo, but only once the wobbles are sorted. at the moment i cnt see that harm as its dry season...
as standard the have a super thin bead of a silicone like goo on them. that's all im putting on to seal it.

major differences in instructions i found was the amount of grease it takes to re grease the hub. bigjimny instructions recommend 100mlhttp://www.bigjimny.com/store/index.php?_a=product&product_id=8, some boris dude says 2-300ml. http://www.jimny.se/kingpinbearings.html

I always used a sealant on my king pins when ever I pulled the front end of my jim apart. Never made any difference

still got heaps of water in there? mabie its to stop the grease escaping more than stopping the water (and mud) getting in there...

The grease wont get out of the kingpins anytime soon.

If there is any sign of water the top kingpin will dry out and corrode first.

With my Jimny build I'm machining some solid tapered bearings that will be heat treated. These will eliminate the pitting associated with roller type kingpin bearings and allow for a higher preload setting.

Hopefully. The CNC lathe is just about finished having its tart up. Once that is done programs will be written.
