ZN,
im after a, i dont want to get bigger tires, but as i do a lot of kms, (approx 600 to 1200km a week depending on what im shooting) being able to sit at 100 kmh and retain some fuel econoimy is paramount,

MIKE AND ZN
i feel the gears may be a bit low, but with an auto i may not be as pronounced as a manual, and be the lesser of 2 evils, especially once i begin towing a trailer. unknown how DAN hasnt had the same problem?? got me stumped.

thanks for all your help guys!

I ran my Sierra around 12 - 15% undergeared, and found it great on road, as well as off.

I made an accidental purchase of lower diff gears than I did the maths for.

It worked out great, I reckon you will be fine with the auto, and it will run cooler towing.

Yeah, looking at his tyre sizes and ratios is a bit confusing.
Im unsure as to why his is different from what factory specs say it should be.

Dan85 wrote:
Mike mine is an auto with 215/75/15 and as I said I have no issues sitting on 100. Sits at about 3100 for 100 but it seems happy enough there.

For Dan85, I get a rough total gear of 4.1
Is it 100 km/h by speedo or gps?
I would highly suspect Dan85 has the 4.3 diffs in his auto jimny.
As this works nicely for 3100rpm (on the dot) for 104km/h
NOTE: we have difference in tyre sizes etc and judging off the needles etc, there will be some degree of error.

For Joel and (what suzuki says) I get a total gear of 3.7 (based on stated tyre size and approx rpm)
Which correlated to the calculated gear specs provided form Suzuki.

So you could also just change your diffs to the 4.3 ratio

I thought all autos were supposed to be 4.3 diffs , but the internet can do that to ya.
I sold the front 4:3 R & P out of my steel GV diff to a guy who used it in the rear of his Jimny.
So that could be an option.
No idea on fronts Jimny diffs, though.

i thought there was only 1 diff ratio for the jimnys & it was a typo in a brochure, as mentioned by MrBlow 8)

joeblow wrote:
yet to see an auto one that has a different ratio than a manual. i've contacted suzuki about different ratios for that model and they do not exist. they are all 4.09 to 1.

joeblow wrote:
if you read the sales brochures they state they are different, this is where we got confused many years ago, but pulling them apart and enquiring with suzuki they aonly list one ratio for aussie models.

As far as I'm aware all auto's diffs are 4.09.
Manuals up to VVT models were also 4.09.
VVT manuals are 4.3.

Supposedly Jimny front diffs are compatible with nothing else due to reverse cut teeth, I think that's what someone called them.

Joel, your best option is a WT transfer or second best, assuming your diffs are 4.09 is R&P swap to 4.3 front and rear. Trial Jimny gears will be so far from what your desired result is it's not funny.
Forget about all the talk about ratios and gear calculators, your tyres geared you up 7% and the two options above will gear you down a very similar amount.

Looking at gear ratios and stuff, Id agree with you, but according to joeblow and suzuki its not.
Id like proper confirmation

Im only doing this so we can have a tool/info for everyone looking for options in the future.

If 4.3 diffs are confirmed to be an option thatd be fantastic. Creates much more options for other things.

Next concern from my part
If you plan to do towing, I would think its a bad idea to be towing in overdrive.

I have a manual VVT Jimny, and I've confirmed that it's 4.3. So has Bugsta, so has Mubby... etc etc. Old news

Also worth having a look at if you haven't already

Yeah sorry I wasn't dissing your info, but was trying to indicate that what Joel needs is simple and doesn't need to get complicated or be worked out to that degree. Your info may be a valuable add to this.

just an update.
i did 2200km of driving on the long weekend last week, i found i can hold 100 if the ground is absolutely flat, and no head wind, but the slightest resistance, and it would drop off the torque range and pop a gear, so after 300km of 80 100 80 100 i cracked it and threw the shifter in 3rd, left it there and ploughed on, revs were at 4000 and speed was a consistent 100km/h.
i was worried what economy i may return, but it was better than what i had been putting up with, didnt get hot and seemed fine.
so that will be my cure from no on.

I turn off my OD when I see a hill, or when towing.
Mine definitely runs cooler at higher revs, and torque converter locked.

Joel, What numbers are on the shifter :? thought it would be like the Vits with 1, 2 & D + OD?

mine seems to hold OD ok on the flats with the trailer... maybe due to the extra power of the 2.0l, but use the OD button when i smell a hill coming... basically like changing between 4th & 5th in a manual.

update.
now im qld i can hold 100 in overdrive,
i put this down to colder air with less humidity, fuel quality being better, and all roads have some sort of barrier, like tress or the high way bollards that act as a wind break, not to mention the road quality is smoother etc, my fuel economy is back to 9.5l/100 instead of 12 ish.

on the trip down here, fully loaded inside and towing a tonne of trailer, from katherine to mt isa we battled a 30knot head wind, that returned some grim results of 190km to a dead empty tank.
we even choose to travel the barkley stock route just to get into some cover and out of the wind.

smashed my big toe out near augathella having an opoeration next week.
brisbane is cold and busy, but its cheap cheap cheap.
cheers
