i was out in the sand a few weeks back and driving along in 4 high on some pretty bumpy terrain and all of a sudden i could hear a quiet grinding noise that fluctuated with speed and sounded as if it was coming from the x case.

i pulled over and couldn't see anything stuck i the drive line and started off again slowly with no noise. after about 50 metres and picking up speed again it started to make the same noise again?? i then tried 2wd and 4wd low and both are working fine..

i have been to scared to put it back into 4 high in case it is doing some serious damage. but has anyone had a similar problem or know what it might be? cheers jamie

Could just be the front shaft spinning at high speed , any oil leaks , also grab the front tailshaft shaft and look for excessive movement up and down , bearing might be on its way out , also have you checked the fluid levels lately , Cheers Paul

Could it be possible that your transfer case has moved slightly on it mounts and your gear shaft is touching the body in 4wd H... and the noise you hear is normal transfer bearing noise but being amplified/vibrating against the body. ??

Remove the rubber boot and check..you may be lucky :)

well i have done a half ruff and havent put the drive shaft spacer in yet? so the yoke is a fair way out of the flange. but i would expect it to do it in 4low aswell if that was the case. and i havent checked the bearings but it was recently rebuilt with all new bearings and reduction gears if that makes a difference. and there is a small oil leak but it is from the gawsket where i didnt use enough silicon shit and it didnt seal properly but there is still heaps of oil in it! i dont think the case has moved either it feels pretty sturdy and doesnt twist from the cab under load in 4 low??
