This project hasn't been forgotten! just had other stuff on!
today i started on the first Nerf bar/Jerry can holder. still need to make the top mount for the can, that will hold it in place, but its a nice tight fit in there.
i have stepped down to 3mm 50x50 for this job as the extra size/weight was not required
i also decided that vertical up MMA welds are just pooh so i will roll the trailer over when its all tacked up and weld it all nicely!
Image
on another note, leaning towards a poly plastic for the sides rather than the ally as i had first intended to use. plastic is a bit lighter, a bit cheaper and a bit different to everyone else!
time will tell.
im happy with how its coming along tho!

I went Poly for similar reasons, particularly the weight as it all adds up.
More pics??

how are you fixing the poly panels to the trailer frame?

Sikaflex marine adhesive sealant goop?

Progression is quite slow due to funds for trailer being very low!! And being able to work on it every now and again! Thought your panels were ally?? My goal is 450kg. The jimny tows 500kg with ease so under that is perfect!

Sikaflex + rivets I'd say! Need to find out if I can paint it first! My trailer will match my jimny!

Reason I was asking about how you intend to secure the panels was that a couple of weeks ago, I replaced the floor of my 5' x 3'6" box trailer, but due to the usual standard of my welding :thefinger: I decided to use Sikaflex marine adhesive/sealant, instead of burning lots of holes in the new floor.

I just chopped out what was left of the old floor, ground and wire wheeled it back to clean metal,
Degreased both surfaces, put a decent layer of Sikaflex on the frame [probably a lot more than it needed]
Dropped the new floor on top of the Sikaflex, then put a pile of paving bricks in the trailer to weigh it down while the Sikaflex cured.

Then spent the rest of the day trying to get the excess Sikaflex off me and everything else before the sandwichmaker got home. [pointless exercise- I always get caught]

The way this stuff sticks- I doubt you will need rivets to hold it in place, just put a decent layer of sikagoo on, and clamp the panels in place until it cures.
The only way you will get them off, is with Sheps help.

I learnt of this goop from a mate in Esperance that makes fire fighting trailers, he uses sikaflex to glue the floors and panels on.
If a panel or floor needs replacing, the panel or floor is hooked up to a tractor, the panel/ floor is heated up with an oxy until the sikaflex lets go and the offending steel sheet is peeled off.

that black sikaflex is dynamite in sticking anything, to almost anything, im using it to pannel my enclosed trailer. plan is for the trailer to pretty much float.

Yeah I use sika a bit!!!
I still think It will need some rivits to keep it under controll! Bonus of the sika is it will make muffin water tight!
Just ordered my gas bottle holder off eBay, was going to make one but far 2 much work! Especially when there only $30 delivered. I am only going to run a 4.5kg bottle on it.

More done today...
will try to cut some of the checker plate bits over the weekend, basicly all the bits you can see though etc will be ally checker and also in between the draw bar.
need to spend a full day on the welder.. but that can wait till the other side is done!
have also run out of steel! so might need to order in another length of 50x50x3 and a few meters of 50x50x5
time will tell!
couldn't get the light mounts 100% but i have decided that's how it will be!

Image
from the front
Image
Not exactly weldporn but cant see it going anywhere.
Image

i also bought a bunch of button head staino bolts to attach the guard and mud guard to that! if i get a chance i will get that done in the morning or tonight after my daughter is in bed.

Oh and i MAY have found another set of CSA magnums!! exciting times.

Cheers! That's the plan mate! even thinking of painting the hubs olive drab. will look MUCH better on a set of CSA magnums to match genki, also my front Kl71's are getting a little low to be effective in the soft stuff, so guess the trailer will have to cop them 2 :D
got a SHIT load done today.
i kind of have to take my time with the whole build, due to my back injury im only aloud to do 2 hours a day as not to aggravate it.. but today i did 4.. with a 3 hour break.. so i will probably be hurting tomorrow.
anyways moving on.
i added up today so far muffin owes me (and my wifey) around 2K and id say we will see it finished at around 2.5k-3k.. not exactly cheep but the tent was 1k alone! i have also lashed out on a few things, like stainless bolts off-road hitch etc Its quite an expensive build but its something i plan to keep with us for basically the rest of my/her life!

so.. both sides of the guards are mounted, all the Jerry holders are done (bar the tie down points)
all that is left to do now is weld on the tail gate hinges, angle under the draw bar, other light holder and draw bar spare mount!
i will try to get that stuff at least started tomorrow. id like to get it set so i can turn it over in the drive way on the weekend and weld all the underside ready for paint! Getting pretty pumped to use it now! still lots more to go!
also need to buy another 20ltr jerry.. i think i will just get one for water as 80ltrs of fuel should see us to most places!
Anyways the pics.. there are a few welds that need cleaning up and some need going over again so don't get 2 judgmental about it all :)

Haha my welds look shit on my trailer, I'm not pointing fingers. Some of the most fun ones were underneath, after taking off paint and then doing overhead with flux core, where I welded the bottom of the floor to the cross members. There's a few things I'd do differently to yours but good work nonetheless. Mines a never ending project, in fact I might do some tonight. Mine's supposed to carry a motorbike though, and started as a jetski trailer.
Trailer parts are expensive.

Ok so i priced up the flooring/sides today..
the biggest problem with the plastic is i cant paint it and sikaflex wont glue it.. but its not a bad price... its quite a hardy material and is non slip. not sure if thats a good thing or not..
Opinions?

8O 8O wotcha mean sikaflex can't glue it, the damn stuff did a good job of sticking me to everything within cooee of me- including me!

It might be the surface of the plastic needs roughing up so it can grip the plastic, I would give whoever makes the plastic sheeting a call and see what they can advise

Another decent day!
once again my ADD kicked in and i got sick of doing one thing so moved onto another!
i finished welding everything i could from the top. i have got back in practice with vertical up's and am pretty happy with the results. (been YEARS since i have needed to do them)
i cleaned up all the welds and flap disked them back for a nice smooth finish.
then i remembered the half sheet of checker plate... Now im usulay with Joe blow when he says "it should be illegal to sell checker plate to the general public" but on a camper trailer it looks at home...
I used my Milwaukee 12v recipro saw (the man saw as its called around my home) and it pulled the job off easy i was cutting 2 of the plates out to one battery pack, so that wasn't great but i have 2 charges, 3 battery's and there a 30min charge time so no worries there! i had a half warn blade at the start of the job and i changed it just before i did the big one.

Once again i changed my mind with the draw bar layout. i have put a big piece of checker on it. i will put a tie down point on each corner, tis will alow us to carry nearly anything on it, from a fridge or it will carry a nights fire wood for a small camp fire!
all the plates will be olive drab. i will mix up a small amount tomorrow and give them a lick!

anyways the pics
one of the mounts and the man saw
Image

rear light mount and my lights. there a sealed unit, and ADR approved. i bought them localy for about $15 more than online however i got what i wanted and they looked the goods
Image

another shot of the rear corner

Starting to look like a camper trailer

so close but yet so far.

^^ mine is still under construction, I think it always will be.

It's coming together well, my only critique is the strength of the draw bar as there's very little to keep it rigid with the box. It'll have almost 100kg up top which will be wanting to rock back and forth and only 8 inches of angle either side to fight it.

Thats tomorrows job.
flipping it over and boxing it in with another 2 lengths of 50x50x5 angle stiched welded in to make it a box section style. Not ideal but will do the job
atm i wouldn't tow it with the tent on. after that's done it should be peachy

You would have been way in front if you just started from scratch and built a new trailer, I am no expert however I can see quite a few things on your trailer that in the N.T would get it defected and unable to be registered again. I can't believe that ya haven't been trolled.

Tassie must be even slacker then the NT when it comes to roadworthyness.

Hows this. i will call the transport office in the morning as ask about the draw bar, what needs to be done etc. if i can use a weld on hitch (already know you CAN in tassie) and the welding etc.
if they so No i will flip it over cut the draw bar off and weld in a 50x70x3 RHS job in there to replace it.
i find it a little ironic that the only part of a originally registered trailer that im using is not up to standard.

The trailer now needs a rego inspection anyways as i let the rego laps so im sure any issue that need to be changed will be bought up then.
But since you find it so important please feel free to let me know what i need to change? since no one else has said anything im guessing its not much.
