lokidog, those pics showing where the spring was are incorrect. you should try and follow the pics that christover posted and the solo image. i did a swift g13ba/ab timing belt a few months ago and that is how i set it up.

Be careful, from memory the G13 and G16 tensioners are slightly different. It should be setup as in the image you've used Lokidog

Ok it seems now I have another small problem that has originated from the same clowns who didn't set the timing belt tensioner up correctly when they replaced the head gasket and timing belt. It seems I have a small coolant weep on the intake manifold side by cylinder one. I'm thinking of loosening then re-tentioning all the head bolts. Considering they supposedly resurfaced the head before replacing the gasket I'm dark about it not even going two years. Here's hoping redoing the head bolts works :(

Last weekend I got around to re-tensioning my Zooks head bolts. I've never really gone beyond doing the basic stuff to my cars ie, engine services (plugs, oils and filters) etc, as I usually leave the more involved stuff to the professionals. Well after spending around $800 the last time I let some so-called "professional" touch my car, the job ended up being sub-standard… So I thought I'd give it a bash myself. Please note: I'm not bagging all professional mechanics, as we have a really good one who does all the work on the family bus.

Anyway I digress… The Hayne's manual came in very handy with all the necessary information, such as torque wrench settings and the 'very important pattern' of undoing and tightening the 10x head bolts etc.

It probably took me twice as long to complete the job, than what an experienced backyard mechanic would have taken. But I was taking my time as it was the first time I'd ever done this, and I wanted to get everything done right.

I undid all the 10x head bolts (in reverse order) by 1/4 turn, then took about 15 mins to read the instructions and understand how to use my new torque wrench. Finally, I proceeded to tighten the head bolts back up. (I set the wrench to just under the maximum recommended torque setting). I managed to turn each bolt to just over 1/2 a turn til when the torque wrench 'clicked'. After putting everything back together, I took the Zook for a quick squirt. Usually I'd have a hint of green coolant on the intake side by number one cylinder. This time there was zilch! I've periodically checked it over the last week and all looks good!!

Thanks Mitch. It was one of those things that I kept putting off doing, as I wasn't confident in attempting it by myself. Eventually I thought bugger it, bit the bullet and had a go.
