Looking to upgrade my brakes there not doing as much as I'd like I only heard them squeal once last week but hand brake sucks and foot to floor a bit too easy.

Any suggestions to rotors, shoes and pads?

Brakes are pretty important so looking for some good stuff

Your brakes shouldn't squeal if they are in good condition. Check the front pads and rear shoes for wear. At the same time check the discs and drums for wear, if signs of wear, they may only need machining not replacing. If within specs you may need to give the shoes,discs and drums a light emery paper to take off the glaze and remove any build up of brake dust. What sort of pedal do you have? Does it slowly sink towards the floor when applying pressure (indicates problem in the master cylinder primary cup/s)? Does it feel spongy with excessive travel (may have air in the system) or does it have a good firm feel to it? Do you have to top up the fluid? Check for evidence of weeping or leaking wheel cylinders and piston seals and master cylinder. Check the pins the calipers float on and make sure the calipers are free to float.

Don't be too quick to replace everything until you know what the problem is. The original brakes are quite good if within specs.

Some pad materials (metallic) will squeal regardless of condition.

Yeah I'm definitely down for the floater and disc conversion, haven't heard any more news on it yet so hopefully it's still on track. Pads have never squealed before and did just once. Pedal feel is a bit soft for my liking. No leaks around aster cylinder or anything i think its just the pads being worn by mud and the drums just sucking but will be checking them when this rain stops for condition. Either way nothing has answered my question of what pads/rotors/shoes do other use for off road reliability.

I read up on rotors a while ago. I was going to get slotted and drilled ones, but apparently they get mud and shit stuck in them. Can't tell you about pads or shoes. All the same to me tbh.

Depending on the driving you do you have several options for pads. Drum shoes only give you one option but quality may change between manafacturers.

Ive always preferred Bendix pads. In a performance car you are good with the bendix metal pads but they need to warm up first before they work well. Down side is they will wear out the discs quickly.

I usually run stock pads in the GV as they work well even when cold and wet.

And as said above drilled and slotted discs will just fill with mud and ruin the pads quicker.


There are even some dedicated 4x4 pads available too.

When I did mine I threw in some dba rotors and bendix 4WD pads. The original rotors could've been machined but for the price and hasssle new rotors for around $100 was the go. The rears on mine had hardly any wear with plenty of meat at the time.
