What type Of Oil do You Put in your Siera 5sp Gearboxes 80W Or 90W???? brands Would also Be Helpfull Thanks.

I use Castrol VMX80 or whatever it is. Oils are oils, I'm not fussed.

i just went to superhcheap and found something that said it was for gearboxes. i think it was castrol too, its called "gear oil".

VMX80 I find the best for gearbox.

vmx80 is used in front wheel drive gearboxes where gearbox and diff is incorporated , use a 80w90 in a rear wheel drive box

how is it any different?

I put this stuff in gearboxes, transfer cases and diffs.

I read "gearboxes and differentials" and i was sold.

I use caltex thuban gl-5 80w 90 in my gear box, transfer, front and rear diffs.

i wouldnt say use this or use that , i just follow a certain regime myself as to what oils to use because the oils i use are meant to last between a full service interval . you can use vmx80 in all your driveline to your hearts content , but the lubricating properties will break down faster in an extreme pressure environment quicker meaning a shorter service interval .

I dont know if many of you recall , but there was an article on engine oils on justcommodores i think it was years ago where they did an oil comparison where they used a machine to show which oils lubricated a bar at a certain force on another rotating part , by the amount of wear on the bar they derived their final verdict on the lubricating properties of the oils. this is all good and well for a new oil , but after time the properties of the oil break down so aside from being a very good test to show what a new oil can be capable of it did not show its longevity.

pretty much the same can be said for air filters , an oem air filter will filter way better than any filter , but it has a short longevity before the element becomes blocked , as compared to a K&n which carries a 1 million km guarantee , the k&n relies on a oil film to trap the small particles of dust because the actual filter itself catches fuck all . now im a big fan of k&n filters for the simple fact you can clean and reuse them , but i highly doubt they can filtrate better than a oem filter.

So make your own choices ...

Tried a few and that VMX80 tends to result in the smoothest shifting box. VMX80 is still a manual trans oil. If it was questionable and broke down faster than other gear oils then we would have had swarms of vehicles coming back to the workshops up north.

Trans-axles would have to be a lot harsher than a std gearbox as they also house the diff gears so why would the oil break down faster than conventional gear oils?

VMX80 is a gearbox/transaxle fluid.....and being only GL-4 rated, is a poor choice for diffs. If you want to use Castrol EPX 80w90 for the diffs (GL-5)
