Hey guys. I have an f10a engine here ready to be rebuilt, but have seen cheap chineese replacement motors online and wondering if anyone has any experience with them, whether they are worth it and whatnot. Also how does my motor perform once you start putting bigger tyres on it, I don't really want to play with gear ratios as I don't want to spemd too much on the thing, Thanks!

Terribly. Putting 30s on mine with no gearing is the worst mod I've ever done to a car. You must be spinning 4500rpm+ at 100 with an F10a. I went from effortlessly cruising at 110 and never losing speed up hills to hardly being able to get to 90. Search the mightyboy forums, I'm pretty sure the chinese motors work out at around $1200 delivered. They're carry motors so there's quite a few differences. On the plus side, you can get them with EFI, I don't know if the inlet manifold will fit into a sierra though

I fitted LJ50/80 diff ratios into my 83 Sierra. They come in 4:6 and 4:9. The stock 1'0 ratio is 4:1. It was brilliant on 30's and 31's. As long as you have the 1.0 diffs still fitted. Were cheap when I did it, no idea todays prices.

The online F10A may be the efi version. No idea what issues that could present. They are probably a lot newer than any donks found here.

If you "don't want to spend too much money on the thing" as you say then I would forget about the import efi engine.

I sort of thought it would be an easier way than rebuilding the whole thing. Plus then id get a 5 speed too. Thought if it was a straight bolt in itd be nice to have a brand new motor. But thanks

I have a freshly rebuilt F10a full (but bare) motor. It was built buy a the guy who sold me my car. I was going to keep it as a spare for my LJ but to be honest the one in my car seems to run fine. Apparently he built it with over sized pistons and too run on standard unleaded.
I would let it go for $500 any less then i will just keep it as a spare or if i can be stuffed swapping it. I think this is just the cost of the rebuild kit and not including labour. I am in Vic SE melb.

He went to the extent of painting it yellow with heat resistant paint and wrapping it up with shrink wrap. To be honest, people keep telling me I would be stupid to sell and not keep it as a spare .

Yes, though a lot of them wound up with F10as. It's an easy bolt in conversion. To fit an F10a in an LJ you need to swap the sump, dizzy housing and exhaust manifold, so those will be different.
On the flywheel end above the starter motor there will be F8a or F10a cast into the block. Other than that they're virtually identical.
It's also possible to turn an F8a into an 970cc motor by boring it out to fit F10a pistons and installing an F10a crank.

The guy before me that owned it had some odd ideas. Haha. Well I am definately keen. I may be able to make it up there within the next few weeks, if not, my brother is coming up there for trade school in 3 weeks time and I will get him to pick it up. So whenever in the next few weeks send us some details or a number and I will call you.

Did you not have to grind the cam and shave the block? And where did you pick up a head that cheap and was it any good? You cant rebuild a head for that price. I think I might keep this one I am rebuilding as a spare and using this one im buying. Sick of choking on burning oil every time I drive it.
