Hey all, just bought myself a Sierra for a new daily/first fourby.
I bought one with a stuffed engine with the mindset of wanting to put a GTI engine in there, however my pop keeps trying to talk me out of it as there will be 'too much stuffing around' involved, I'm always up for a challenge and I am mechanically minded, so I was looking forward to the learning experience of it, but he still wants to talk me out of it because of all the wiring etc. I have located a reconditioned G13B and I was curious as to maybe just install it as a Carby engine, not EFI. I have been trying to do some research on it and can't find any threads on the conversion. The motor does not come with any injectors or ECU etc, so I figured just running it as a carby I wouldn't be at much of a profit loss, considering I would have had to source all the electrical etc myself. Hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance!!

The G13B was never available as a Carby engine in any Factory version anywhere. To set it up with Carbs (and there's no reason why it won't run well with carbs), will require fabrication of an inlet manifold to suit you particular choice of carburettor/s. Over they years there have been some aftermarket manifolds for various multi carb set-ups, but I don't know of any currently available in production, so you will be scouring for a fairly rare second-hand item.

Just to be a smart arse the G13b was availaible as an 8v carb or single point injection. Most commonly its stamped 'G13BA' but i have seen one jap import engine that said g13B and others have mentioned it in conversationin the past, they can't asll be 16v bottom ends with 8v heads bolted on.

As for the DOHC 16v that everyone means when they say g13b, no carby. BUT early 16v SOHC G engines had TBi (throttle body injection/ single point injection) Pretty certain the intake manifolds can swap over. Just one has injector in head the other in the manifold.. i forget which is which. In any event if the injectrs are in the DOHC head then you should e able to plug them with bolts. (i can check later, i hve a cultus GTi-A head under my house)

What year is the GTi motor? The reason i ask is if its an early 80's gti motor from the boxy gTI's i think the ignition is stand alone and not controlled by the ECU.

In which case its custom extractors, a mazda right angle dizzy cap, a 16v SOHC TBi intake manifold , rejetted stock carb (possibly with adaptor plate to match intake) playing with all the vacuum hoses, swap oil sump and pick up and you would have a carb DOHC (later model engines you would need a jaycar electronc ignition kit)

Still a bit of work and unless the motor itself is next to nothing maybe not worth the headache. There is evidence that there is some gain from 8v->16v carb motors (ie mazda F series engine) and you even have a play with the two stock cam gears to make 4 different cam profiles stock cams by changing lobe seperation and cam degrees. EG stock Intake is like 0 degrees and exhaust is 4 degrees so your options are I/E I/I E/E E/I. (these would or shift your peak power up or down the rev range, from memory wider lobe seperation helps low end torque and advancing cam degrees shifts down, retarding shifts up.. you definately want to move the powerband down)

Quirky and different with tuning potential but i imagine basically all you would be doing is moving your redline to 7500rpm with any other gains at the mercy of 'new discovery'

there you go :peaceout:
i thought the caps could be modified

BROOKSY if the current engine is stuffed lsten to your pops and just buy a cheap 8v swift engine from the wreckers ($200-$350) swap it in and start wheeling. If you are still keen to experiement with your customising mechanics skills you could rebuild the current motor and make a parts hybrid off it. Very few people try to break into new territory as no one can help them with established eperiences. Funnily someone would of had to do the first 8v g16a, then another first g16b vit engine and finally the g16b baleno swap into a sierra for everyone else to benefit!

Ah good stuff, thanks guys! Just wanted to put in something with a little bit more oomph, but nothing that needs some full on customisation done. Haven't done much research into the G16a, might have to look into that

some quad carb info here, but it's all on the G13a... but i'm sure they'd work well on the G13b

Should be g13ba AFAIK

if it is 12 something something cc it is 'ba'

13 something something cc it is 'a'

G13A bore = 74mm, stroke = 77mm cc=1324
G13B bore= 74mm, sttroke =75.5 cc=1298

EDIT: Edited for actual tech

I'm just gonna be a devils advocate here, I know you want to do something different but to be honest i think carbying a GTI motor is a bit of a waste of time (unless you do bike carbs which would be cool) you'll still require custom fab to get it all to work.

An EFI conversion isn't really all that difficult, id go so far as to say its easier than setting up carbs on a gti motor. the reason most people upgrade to EFI is the reliability, they always run right or generally throw a code when they don't and generally start better, run better and have more power and torque. If the wiring really scares you then you can send the loom off to a guy in brisbane for $450 who will do it all for you. The downfall of alot of people doing wiring is they obsess over what every pin on the ECU does, this is irrelevant. Start at the other end of the loom workout which plug you dont need and strip them out which leaves you with what you need. I did my loom in 2 evenings with no wiring diagram at all, I just labelled the loom as I removed it.

I'd suggest buying a donor vitara or baleno, buying a BenT kit, bolting it all in, do the wiring and sort out a fuel pump/tank. There plenty of info on here for it. A baleno/vitara motor is more common and gives you around 15-20% more torque than a GTI motor. I know people who have paid $250 for whole baleno's and I paid $600 for my donor vitara minus the bits I sold off it. Also all the GTI motors are getting pretty tired and have probably been driven hard. its not hard to find a baleno with around 100,000km's on it, they're much newer as production finished in the early 2000's

1298cc G13BA is the 1.3l for 91 models

1324cc G13A is 1.3l for pre-88.5 models

Both motors will fit in a 91, but G13BA is what you want to satisfy pollution requirments on 'paper'

To be honest i'd be suprised if the local traffic authorty would pick up on older engine in a newer vehicle
G13Axxxxxxxxxx and G13BAxxxxxxx doesn't really look different. (i currently hve an 89 engine in my 92 sierra.. but its 'ok as i am using all the 92 pollution gear')
The parts are pretty much interchangible beteen A & B Blocks. The 'B' 1298cc Block just has extra mounting holes for accesories and a spot for knock sensor and the block casting looks more modern.

When i first got my sierra i was convincd i wanted to upgrde it to efi and run a dohc 16v Gti-A engine etc Now days i prefer to leave it carb and simple to repair/jury rig when in remote places without dependency on parts etc. I actually like the stock aisin carb but have been tempted at dual or quad carbs. Just not something would recommend to someone starting out. (though rebuilding a peppy hybrid 8v is  )

Actually that's incorrect - I have a Swift with a carbureted G13B, SOHC, 8V - if you have access to the dealer databases, I'll give you the chassis number and you can verify the build config yourself.

Ah okay, thanks everyone, down in Adelaide Balenos aren't very common, but then again neither are sierras or any other car haha I'm not really new to having a car, I've got a few others, one being a 69 Ford Capri 1600GT, which I'm restoring overtime, so I like learning about cars, plus I'm an apprentice Fridgy, so I'm mechanically minded and deal with wiring all the time, I think my pop just wants me to have a simple carby engine, but I want something with a little more power than the stock engine, plus mine's got a cracked piston skirt, so I'm gonna need to put something in there regardless. Really appreciate all the help you guys are giving me! :D

Brooksy where in the world are you?

If you are sydney-sider i have pistons, rods, heads (and even bare G13A/ G13BA engine blocks ready to be machined) that you are welcome fo free. A complete gasket set and some fresh rings on ebay could sort out your cracked piston skirt on your original to have you running again. that way you can drive i and have a better idea what you need rather than going through all the effort of some exotic hybrid and end up realising you want/need something else.

My daily driver has nearly stock everything (engine, exhaust, gearing, tyres) with some bigger jets and intake mods and it goes over 110 and i often find myself backing off the throttle to stay a posted speed limits. I've had i 8 or 9 years never found i lacking offroad

Fixed.

Surely the guys on redlineGTi are throwing manifolds and injection gear over their shoulders to fit ITBs and so on?

Haven't had a look there yet Matthew, thanks.
Not looking at putting a second hand engine in, I'm wanting something that's been completely reconditioned.
Thanks for that Santos, really appreciate it! I'm probably just going to end up rebuilding the engine in there and just working it a little.

for the 8v carb 1.6l?

Someone may correct me bu I think it just the gearbox adaptor kit and swapping over the 1.3l oil pick up and sump. The sierra exhaust manifold bolts up as does the intake if you are missing the vitara one, rejet aisin carb if using sierra intake, there is a thread somewhre of what sizes are appropriate for 1.6l engine with 1.3l carb
