If your local cops say you can there is a perfect excuse if you get pulled over for it.

Yep - trouble will be when your wallet/phone/house key falls out of your pocket and out the door on the freeway, or when you go through a puddle and water splashes on you and your clothes become wet (not to mention if it rains), or when other motorists start to stare, lose concentration and accidentally side-swipe your car after seeing something so bizarre as someone driving without doors.

If it was legal (which it might well be) to do this and you did it then you will still be a magnet for cops just to pull you over to see if there is anything else 'strange' with your car which may or may not be illegal. The trick to not being pulled over is to conform and not stand out from thousands of other motorists you share the roads with.

Technically yes, but as Reubs said you will draw attention thus getting a critical eye put over the whole thing. IMO no point if you're not rocking 33's +

Its not legal in WA or any state running NCOP... The rules basically state that if the vehicle came with it, you have to keep it.

I successfully argued to run half doors though, as the Holden Drover came out with factory half doors - just that mine will be cut lower than drover ones, but they don't need to know that so long as they approve it.

Nope - i couldnt find it myself until i phoned my local DoT and spoke to someone in vehicle modifications... he said over the phone point blah blah note blah of blah document...

That's when i proposed half doors and he said that should be ok if it came out on a version of the vehicle (this would also apply if you asked to fit 16" rims on a sierra, because some variants came with 16s).

I've got the half doors approval in writing too.

We have recently had the same response from an engineer in Vic. If it came with doors, they have to be present.

I've driven with no doors quite a bit but I WAY prefer cut 1/2 doors.

So if that is true you can't remove your soft top either. Probably reads that if the manufacturer didn't design the item to be removed you can't. Probably quicker to take doors off then a soft top

Half doors definitely feel safer to drive around in and wheel in.
No doors on the beach is cool though.

The other issue is, a police man doesn't need to know for sure your car has illegal mods, he can just say "hmm i think thats illegal, but im not sure, but just to be sure here have a defect notice, go and take your car to the big mean deparment of transport inspection station where they will go over it with a fine tooth comb, find all the problems, and then take your car off the road untill they are fixed"

You dont want to give them a reason to pull you over.

You're in VIC right drover? Surely the process is a requirement for a RWC, with a cursory check by vicroads to ensure the nominated items have been rectified? That's the experience of most of us.

In any case, there seems to have been a change that has brought every state into line and doors are definitely required.

As I've said, I think 1/2 doors are more desirable than doorless anyway, especially in Vic.

I know its a different fish, but when I took my LJ in for a RWC it was not required to have doors (it has soft doors stock). The problem was more that fiberglass is not a legal subsitute for a floor apparently .

I spose if you really want to drive without doors,....you could get a moke, but that might not be popular on this forum. I have had a ride in one with the top off and it was very airy.

Wranglers have factory removable doors that require no tools, the factory handbook specifically mentions that the doors are removable which is how they get around with no doors.

I got asked by a cop for a engineers cert for a chrome muffler that added no performance or noise, was just Crome, I asked what happens if my muffler rusted & fell off did I need a cert for the new one... Had him stumped, wasn't on a sierra btw lol

I understand the real issue relates to the reverse mirrors. On a Jeep the mirrors are fixed to the A Pillar and because of this the doors can be removed. My Sierra has the mirrors mounted on the doors and because of this the doors may not be removed.

^^ i did this - it sucked. The MB mirrors vibrate around and are quite small - add to that they don't fold in, so if you're 4wding and you hit the mirror on something you're either snapping it off or bending it bigtime.

Make some mirror relocation brackets that pick up the hinge screws.

Get some decent bike mirrors and take them off when you go offroad.

simple answer is no , even a broken doorstrap is deemed as "unroadworthy".
