Hey yall, i pulled my carby apart cleaned it up unclogged some lines replaced alot of gaskets, rubber thingo's and a rod that makes fuel squirt in. It's now working and running pretty smooth but needs some pretty serious tune. The plugs are black and I've been told that that is because it's running rich? I found the idle screw the choke screw, but i can't figure out how you mix the fuel and air right. Is is a play around thing or a take it to a shop kinda thing? It's still blowing smoke... will tuning it help? I have a FSM so ill keep looking in that...

turn the mixture screw out 2.5 turns, this should give you a point to start from, make sure the idle is ok and the timing is correct, there was an old way of adjusting it via the low idle and then turning the mixture until a high idle and then re adjusting the idle screw, but it has been ages since i have had a carby car so i have forgotten the technique, im sure someone here will know it, maybe one ofthe older and more wise members!!!!

where is the mixture screw?

shit josh i have not even looked at my carby yet.... im guessing it will be down the bottom of the carby somewhere and it would of probably had an oring on it that you would of replaced, it will be one of the screws you put back in that looks like it doesnt hold it together if you know what i mean, it should just screw into the body of the carby

oh and standard setting will be 1.5 to 2 turns out not 2.5 as i stated above

hey read your service manual, it will describe the old stlye tuning tips i described above, it is usually a generic page that all old service manuals have in them, kind of like the spark plug chop page that shows the plug colours, infact i think it is even in that same section

The mixture screw is should be capped from the factory, but I'm guessing after 20 odd years, the caps probably been removed by now. On the base of the carby where it attaches to the inlet manifold there should be a screw with a spring behind it. From memory I think it's on the rocker cover side of the carby. This is your mixture screw. With your engine running, screw it in to lean off the idle mixture. You should notice the idle increse and smoothen out if it's running too rich. Keep screwing it in until you notice the idle deteriorating again, then screw it back out again about half a turn. That's it, and the best you'll get without hooking it up to a 4 gas anylizer.
If you screw it in all the way and the car is still running, you have a problem. Maybe your float level is set too high, but it's really anyones guess until you tear the carby down again.

thanks rockhopper, yeah i wound it in to far and now it runs rough as...grr But i can't move the stupid screw when on the car... does anyone have a brilliant solution for this?

um mine is like a a hex bolt but the inside of the hex is smooth i can only turn it with pliers...

are you sure you have the right screw, i cant imagine them building a carby that cant be tuned whilst on the car, however im willing to be corrected

no im not even sure i rebuilt the carby... or was it the tyre... yes the mixture screw is the correct one it made a heap of difference once i played with it...

last photo, bottom, dead center, is the mixture adjustment screw.

Mine is screwed in till it stops then 1 and a half turns out. This is great as it starts pretty much as soon as the key is flicked on and idles at about 1000rpm. But once warm the idle is all wrong it starts to die then at the last minute it squirts fuel in and it comes back up again. It repeats this cycle about every 5seconds... i read something about a fast or warm idle adjustment and i can't find it in my FSM.

your warm idle adjust is the screw that you can see just above the hose in the last pic, to the right of the carby

oh i was adjusting that one for cold idle... so where is the cold idle adjuster... sorry for all the questions im not dumb... honest

well it is just really the fine adjust screw. usually you use it just to fix it up while warm and because you shouldnt have to move it much it wont upset cold. you need to be playing with the other things and getting it good before going to that one. Like the two screws in the centre of the pic third from the bottom and the mixture adjust. then when they are pretty good, it should be running fairly well cold, just slightly adjust the fine adjust to correct it up

The screw just above the hose in those pictures is your idle adjustment. To see the cold idle adjustment, operate the throttle by hand to full throttle and you'll see it on the throttle linkage. You can see it clearly on the left of the second photo and the bottom on the third photo. On the bottom of the 4th photo is another screw which is the adjustment for the idle up adjustment. I'm guessing this screw in conjunction with your idle screw is what you'll want to adjust. Fast idle by the way (when cold) should be between 1500 and 2000 rpm.
Just check one other thing. I know this sounds stupid, but does the car behave any differantly when you switch the headlights on?

Yes it flips over the bottom half splits in 2 and starts running. Then out of the bonnet comes a head and the wheels become arms and it starts yelling at stuff and shooting baddies... all i wanted was my head lights.

OK ill have to go out with all this info and play with it, they do seem fickle
