Hello again.

I have leak from the rear of the extension on my '83 4 speed box. I took this box apart last week to fix the release bearing and reverse lever but now I'm having a brain fade and cant remember what the inside of the extension looked like. I guess there was a seal in there that I didnt pay enough attention to. Is this simply called the 'rear gearbox seal' as listed here on ebay?

I vaguely remember there might have been a bush of some kind in there as well but cant find that on ebay. Does it have to be replaced?

Does the extension have to come off again to fit this seal or can it be fitted from outside? Does anyone have a side diagram of this gearbox/extension. I only have manuals for the LJ80 and the 5 speed box and they are not much help.

Rear gearbox seal is a lipseal that runs on the slip yoke of the jackshaft. You should be able to replace it in position, just remove the jack shaft, pop the old seal out and install the new one.

Thanks. Replacing the seal was easier than expected. Removed the shaft and the gearbox mount, pried the old seal out with a couple of small screwdrivers, then pressed the new seal in with a bit of help from a hammer and a 1 1/8 inch socket. No need to drain the oil either. A little bit of oil drips out during replacement but nothing too messy.

Being able to raise and lower the gearbox with a jack helps a bit to. Fortunately I have a pit so I have room to move.

The value of a pit is almost priceless, but heres a little tip. If you ever dig a pit make sure its long enough. Mine is too short. I had a solid old house door lying around and figured I could use it as a pit cover. So the pit was dug to that size. It looked big enough, but in practice its often too short and I can't reach the centre point of a normal size sedan. I forgot that you lose at least 50 cm at the front of the pit as a space to climb down. Its not a huge problem, (especially for a little Suzi) but nirvana for me would be a pit with at least 3 stairs at one end and still be long enough to reach both diffs without having to turn the car around.

Good advice. I guess one must be aware of all the "pitfalls"
