I have a 1.3 wt sierra and looking at the possibility of putting a g16a vitara motor in, what is required for the swap?
Thanks

I did this, major upgrade, everyone will say go the G16B which is the fuel injected job, whatever, you will need a adapter kit.

viewtopic.php?f=15&t=15009

His gear is very nice, everything is made by him, well bar bolts n shit, has a wonderful set of directions, cannot give high enuf acolades.

I went a much bigger radiator as well.

Something else to think of is a brake upgrade, the LWB vitara fronts are a direct replacement, and vented, far superior.

I done it recently and can say it goes hard! You will also need to modify the pickup and use a Sierra sump.

Anyone done this in Victoria recently? Looking at swapping G13A for a G16 with carby. Does it need a VASS certificate and if so anybody know how much it costs?

Thanks

Yes, it will need engineering approval. I can't comment on cost.

Personally, I think G16a's make a pretty average swap. Yes, there is a gain in torque, but they don't like to rev as hard as the G13 due to the longer stroke and there's still carby hassles to deal with.

They were the thing to do in the mid 90's when G16B efi motors were almost impossible to get, but now its much easier to find a G16B than a G16A.

X2 a friend put a rebuilt G16a into his Sierra. Wouldn't ever do it again. Sure, it was slightly more powerful than the 1.3l but it certainly wasn't worth the effort and cost. He's planning to replace it with a G16b.

I went with a G16a because one came up locally for cheap and I already had a busted 1.3 in the car. It was very minimal extra work to make the G16a work instead of another G13ba and it was more than worth it. Cost was the adaptor plate but it can be used for the G16b anyway. There really isn't many 16b's around up here or I'd have one with an AW4 in my car, and I wouldn't bother pulling a healthy G13ba engine out for another carby motor but it's a decent upgrade if you're pulling the engine anyway

The current G13A engine looks like its using oil, around 1/2lt every 200-300km, Carby's been rebuilt by a carby place but doesn't seem to have been tuned right (it won't idle less than around 1100rpm and I've now adjusted all the screws back as much as I can but still wont drop the rpm, suspect I'll end up pulling it apart). It currently seems to run Ok in 1st,2nd,3rd gear starts to flag in 4th and completely lacks power to maintain speed in 5th. not sure if this is normal, the carby or engine. not sure which. Its only got standard 205/70s on it at the moment and I was going to put some 215/75 or 235/75s on it but not sure without knowing how the engine will perform rebuilt. I was looking at rebuilding the engine as I'm partially sentimental and like having the original motor in the car but then saw a rebuilt G16A for sale with adaptor plates, new clutch and spare transmission for $1000 neg.

if I put in a G16A, I could keep the G13A as spares and reuse the head, carby etc if needed in the future.

Might sound funny but I'm not keen on EFI, part of the fun of the car was the older style simplicity, although the Asin carby makes me think EFI would be easier...... Also not excited by the wiring involved for EFI.....

If I rebuilt the G13A any suggestions on tweaks to get it running better. It already has extractors with 2" sports exhaust. Don't like webber carby as most of the cars use is off road up and down hills etc.

for the $ involved I'm more than happy to consider all points of view before making a decision.

Thanks

Jas

My 1.3 was doing the same - every second tank my oil levels were going from full to empty. That said - I drove it across Australia in this condition and the 'lil motor never gave up on me... just cost me a fortune in oil, lol. Prior to that I was also having carby issues, but with the $2K rebate available at the time it worked out cheaper to get it running straight LPG... so I did just that. Also let me get rid of the birds nest of vacuum lines associated with the carb. IMO vacuum leaks are the achilles heel of the Aisin - great if you've got none, but a total mind fuck if you've got one that you can't put your finger on.

I got a newly rebuilt G16A installed over here in the west and couldn't be happier. Was a night and day difference from the tired old 1.3. Apparently the G16B is another step up in performance but i'm more than happy with the improvements gained with the G16A. I can now easily keep up with traffic, overtake at will, highway speeds (and beyond) are no problem, there's no slowdown when I reach an incline, and with the Aisin I wasn't using all that much more fuel than the 1.3. I say go for it.

If you're dead keen to stay carby (which I can understand) then certainly go for that G16a. Unless you're doing it yourself a decent rebuilt will be much more than $1000.

I should clarify, we'd never do another G16a conversion on a Sierra with an already healthy motor but if you needed a new motor anyway it'd certainly be a good option. Obviously it's a lot cheaper and easier than a G16b but the gains are minimal.

Just done the g16b conversion on my sierra. Hardest part was the wiring. Took me a few nights to get my head around it. It's now running but I'm still putting my car back together.

Cheers Aaron

I did the g16a and regret it everyday since.... If I had it again is rebuild the 1.3 and be happy... Or a injected 1.3 or 1.6.... The 1.6a is just as temperamental and the 1.3.... I've now started to rebuild a 1.3 just because it's easier as cops hang out where we drive a lot because people have been trashing the joint

If anybody's interested, I spoke to VicRoads today about swapping the engine and if it would be legal for a P plater to drive (for when the kids are older). As the engines only 4 cylinder and not turbo or supercharged, they said it would be legal for a P plater. I queried it twice and specifically asked about the modified engine clause in the prohibited vehicles description to be sure. :)

I also phoned 2 VASS signatories in ballarat, 1 can't sign off engines and the other just didn't want to know about it. Just told me that they were booked out until next year and to call someone else. (even though I wouldn't want it done until next year). They wouldn't even talk to me about what was involved. I got the impression they just aren't interested in it. Anybody had similar experience or know of a VASS signatory in who's "hasstle free"? Would go Ballarat, Geelong, Bendigo, Melbourne or further at a push if needed.

Thanks

Spoke to another VASS place this afternoon, indicative price to get a VASS certificate for the engine change to G1.6 was $1000-$1500. :(

For that sort of $ I think I'll just rebuild the G1.3A myself and drive in the slow lane....
