It's done amazing things to my zook!

I purchased a pod filter for $10, got a few little extra things like a small right angle tube, clamps and a small air filter. Total cost was something around the $35 mark!
Smacked it all together under the hood and bam, good as gold.

I wasn't expecting this to do much at all. I thought it may sound a little better and look cool, but that's about it.

So I took my buzz box for a bit of a drive and off the mark the sound was pretty cool, but then I noticed it actually having an affect with the speed.
There is a road that's up a pretty steep hill, I always go up it and just over the crest you can see the speed sign, which is 100km. Seeing this sign I automatically look at my speedo, which prior to installing the pod it would be at 52kmish :P
Now this time I was cruising at 65km with ease and wasn't revving like a goose.

I'm also actually getting into 5th gear allong the parkway. (Normally never bother with 5th as I slow down and revs don't get high enough)

Now I know it's probably a terrible idea to instal a pod filter if you're planning on going through water, mud and lots of dirt. But if it's your everyday driver and is used more around town, I'd seriously highly recommend it!

I don't know if I'm sounding like a complete fool and that everyone knows that it will do this. But I'm pretty chuffed with my $35 mod, and it's just one little thing that helps around town until I get a snorkel and fit the airbox back on.

So yeah! I'm a happy chap! (:

I'd say its madder than a sierra airbox that doesn't seal. :?

Or going by the worse the filtration the sicker it is, maybe the leaky sierra air box is the cats meow?

So installing a pod filter also gave you taller gearing? Now that is amazing.

I cant see the issue, he clearly states its a bad idea for offroading. He is not recomending a pod filter for water crossings or dirt roads.

My car is 90% driven on tarmac as i drive it to work each day. So somethign like this might be worth looking into if it gives the claimed gains (which im skeptical of). Then just swap in my airbox when i go 4wding (which is not that often)

I don't think the issue is so much that, many people just reckon to get a larger OEM air box, which solves problems with the sierra air box both on road and off road. (i.e.: too small/ restrictive to flow well, doesn't seal the best from dirt and water.)

Obviously any mention of pod filters is going to get the "you a fully sic p-plater bro.. " comments.

In any case, still plenty of crud / small particles in the air on road too, but thats just what I think.

Do you think someone who can't be bothered doing any research into the uselessness of pod filters, And can't be bothered installing a larger air box that will add performance on and off road, will swap between a pod and the stock airbox depending on where/what they are driving?

Seems unlikely.

Just curious - assuming the K&N (or whatever) would filter out the worst of the airborne junk... wouldn't the finer stuff get burnt straight out the exhaust or picked up by the oil filter?

Is there an estimation how many KMs a K&N will shorten a well-maintained engine's life by? Lets assume a typical 4x4 scenario and not that of an outback bulldust road daily driver.

The problem with dirt getting past the filter is that it's just that -dirt, as in, mostly, silica. It's very abrasive, and doesn't burn in the combustion chamber. It basically gets pushed between the rings and cylinder, causing wear. Sure, it ends up in the filter eventually.

When oil analylsis is used to determine oil life, the measure of filter effectiveness is the amount of silica in the oil.

An example of how abrasive dust is - I trashed the windscreen on Piggles by scraping the overspray off it, with a brand new blade, whilst the screen was dusty. It's now terribly scratched. A cylinder wall will be easier to scratch than glass, which is pretty hard.

Will the dirt that passes a K&N shorten the engines life? Yes. No doubt. However, it's hard to measure in practise, because there's too many variables, and most people who fit a crap&n filter apply it to a tuned motor or a second hand motor that's already half worn, so the effect on the remaining life of the engine isn't easy to calculate. What I can say though is that it's a fact that crap&n filters pass larger particles (when clean) than a stock paper filter, so it's less effective as a filter than what the factory specified. The factory won't spec more filter than they can get away with*, so i think pulling it and putting a less effective filter in the car doesn't seem to make sense.

I used to know a bloke who did an engineering placement at GMH. Some bright spark in the accounting department had the idea of pulling a supporting wire out of the panel air filter in the commodore, with the plan being to save, I don't know, $1 per car? So they tested a filer with the support wire removed at lang lang proving ground, on the dust track my mate had the job of driving the dust making car for the test car to follow. The filter collapsed once it was laden with dust, passed dust and seized the engine. The wire stayed. Don't think that manufacturers try every possible way to make cars cheaper to make. They're already likely to have the smallest, lightest filter they can get away with.

When it comes to 4WD's, they, by rights, should have more filter than a comparable road car. This isn't the case with Suzuki any more - their cars and 4WD's pretty much use the same sized filter. Compare the size of a swift GTi filter to a 1.3 sierra filter, and you could see what it was like in the old days - the road car had a tiny panel filter and the Sierra had a relatively huge cyclonic filter.

However, a baleno and a jimny have the same sized filter. What happened? Suzuki realised that people don't take their cars off road any more, so there's no need to design a filter solution for off road conditions. Money saved.

I think the worst possible outcome is putting a crap&n panel in a jimny airbox, It's already too small, so air velocity though it is high (bad for restriction across the panel) and service intervals are frequent. Then, an owner puts in a less effective filter medium that depends on user servicing to work properly.

Great information Steve.
Do you think the stock Sierra system is a good system? or should it be upgraded?

Nope. I don't like the stock sierra housing. The filter itself is fine, it's well sized. The intent was there - the basics of a cyclonic filter housing are there.

The problem it just doesn't seal very well. It also doesn't have a proper dust trap. It has a hole for the dust/water to fall out.

I like 80's hiace filters.

Thanks for the posts Steve, certainly food for thought.

BTW, that top engine bay needs a bloody good clean out! As an OCD Sierra owner i'm breaking out in a sweat just looking at it

just saying that calling your mate dumb is a bit unfair considering you proceeded to bolt on a pod filter to your jimny.
