Does it have a RWC? If so, go and transfer rego now. If not, wait till the conversion is complete, and you've fixed all the other issues, then go get RWC. When you're at DOT they'll change the engine number over for you

The engine in another car? so you bought this car to take the engine out and use it elsewhere?

If its as is and you don't have a safety certificate then you wont be able to, DOT will just take the plates off you, if you do have a safety certificate and the money you get back cancelling the rego is more than the stamp duty and costs to transfer it then sure why not.

Otherwise DOT might get upset about trying to register an engine that is already registered to another car so it would need cancelling anyway

Just re-read the first post and I'm a little confused. You bought the Baleno to get engine out of, I assume it's going into a Sierra? Are you talking about registering the Sierra with the Baleno motor transplanted?

ok hopefully this is the answer you require :

1. you cannot transfer the rego of the donor car to your car , you have to cancel the registration of that vehicle and hand in the number plates to dept of transport and they will refund some of the balance of rego pertaining to that vehicle (possibly to the "registered owner").
2. once you strip that car and get rid of the bodyshell , the vin will have nothing to do with anything. although if you have the vin its always handy for when ordering parts for the engine or fuel injection system.
3. you will need an engineer to modplate the conversion ,you also need to go down to dept of transport with your new certificate and get shit changed , they will probably want to sight the engine number themselves as well , otherwise be prepared to be fisted anally with no lube , under the new anti hoon/bikie legislation .
