hey guys so i have a project idea.

now i don't know alot about zooks but i do like them.
the idea is a stockman because i think they are a little bit longer in wheel base and i like utes.

now i was thinking of a coil conversion to ether the front or both front and rear.
and i was wanting to put a turbo motor in it but not sure what? i was thinking an sr20det but honestly im not sure what would be best.
i dont want a race truck just want something i can have a bit of fun with.
i am wanting to run 33" muddies although i know alot of you may say "why? just run 31's!" but i want 33's.
and i want to put under it hilux diffs.

apart from that it will just have the normal stuff lockers bull bar winch lights that kind of stuff.

just to finish it off i am wanting to do it as cheap as posible i dont want to go spending 40 or 50k

so any advice and help you can give me would be great thanks.

What do you intend to drive?
If your current 4wd is a patrol, do you intend to keep it? Keep up with or exceed it's offroad capabilities? Maintain roadworth status in your particular state? What kind of terrain do you drive?

If i was planning on taking a sierra to the pilbara/kimberley - i'd buy a GV3.

but seriously - fit a g16b(efi), some 215/75r15's and spend the rest on lockers and recovery gear. Your trip will be 99% on the blacktop - you'll want road manners and drivability more than offroad extremeness. You'll also want to buy a really good set of ear-muffs to block out all the road noise and reduce fatigue!

na i really do want to go the bigger 33's and muddies and i have done big trips before and understand alot of driving on the blacktop but at the end of the day its not the only trip il be doing and since il be spending quit a few months out bush i really would like the coils and at the very least 31's.
but alien i would like to know your thoughts further on this topic? and what is a g16b.... i take it is an engine? although i do really want a turbo.
how would i go about doing this project and is it possible?

Without trying to offend, your "wants" really go against what makes a capable Suzuki.
Those bigger tyres have zero benefits in the Pilbara (I used to live in Port Hedland and would never run 33's there).
A turbo is definitely not needed on or off road if your gearing is correct (and I've been and done it).
A sierra on 31's, locked front and rear with basic leaf suspension mods will outdrive a cheap coil conversion any day of the week, and be significantly less work.

There is no need for hilux Diffs on 33
Buy a gv and put 31 on it
some 512 diff gears and lockers and to gears
Makes heaps more sense
Has 2.5l motor
Coils all round
Quiet
Comfortable

ok seriously dont you listen i said its not the only trip i plan on doing i want to do the vic high country and i prefer my hill climbs and rock crawling so hence why i want the coils plus comfort... a well done coil set up will be 10x more comfortable and you know that. a turbo because i would like to have a little bit of fun when i drive it and you cant say there not fun boosting around. you clearly don't understand the idea or respect it, stick to your basic design of the zook and il ask other ppl for there opinion because you have given me no advise on the idea apart from tell me its wrong.
P.S. what makes a zook capable is its light weight and short wheel base nothing else.... coils would most likely improve its capability.
got bar work whats a gv please?

These guys are just having a laugh at your expense. Saying your a troll is saying your someone just stirring shit to get a rise.
They are serious about going long distances in a Sierra, its not a touring car usually.

Look at Gwagensteve's HEDGEPIG!. LWB 35s & coils.
This car drives awesome, but its not a touring car.
I used to have a Pajero for touring and a Sierra for 4wding. When I get back from Vanuatu I will probably buy a GV for my DD/touring car.

I'm building 33s on a SWB on stock diffs, this is my 5th Zuk.. I will upgrade to chromos if and when I get some lockers.

my 2c
If your super keen to get modding, Buy a LWB, Start with a 1.6L Coilpack motor out of a Baleno, gears and 31s then go driving. 31s you can fit with a hammer.
Go with other sierras and drive your terrain and then design the build, keeping in mind your original ideas.
If your going for 33s, you will be best to go for 33x10.5s I think this is the ultimate zook tire.
Avoid a body lift. Dont go for big lift. Avoid hilux diffs unless your building a comp rig or running at least 35s.

If you aren't getting the answers you want (i.e. a stream of people agreeing with you and telling you you're idea is awesome) then I say simply build the thing if it makes you happy. If you are asking for an opinion and advice people will give them. If you are asking for approval and a circlejerk they won't be forthcoming.

Not true; blanket statements like this are illogical.
We see this sort of thinking in drag racing all of the time. "If power makes me go fast then tuning for more power will make me go faster!" - simply inaccurate if you can't get that power to the ground and in some cases (weather dependent) if you tune for less power you will actually get down the track quicker.
My point is, coils are good in many vehicles depending on their original suspension and vehical design. A sierra is not really a design that overly benefits from them; sure you can change the design but then you aren't simply talking about coils - you are talking a complete underbody rethink.

camshaft wrote:

Essentially, yes. And yet nothing you have mentioned really exploits those advantages. (You're adding more weight and if you're thinking of lifting the thing into the sky you are exacerbating one of the negative aspects of a SWB - high centre of gravity and poor stability.)

One bit of "advice" is keep it simple. you dont want to be driving around in the middle of knowwhere with such a modified car that if it breaks you dont know where to start fixing it.

Do you actually want 33" tyres, or do you want the ability to tell people you have 33s?

Big difference.

Pat Callaghan Vs 4wd action both go to the same places, one gets there by picking the right line and good driving skills, the other big tyres lots of power and foot to the floor.

Depends on how you want to drive.

You can turbo but you will find the vitaras are quite fun to drive standard. Esp the 2.5L manuals. the 1.6L vitaras are surprisingly torque.

Sorry dude but your getting it all wrong. ive done long trips in a sierra with leaves and they can be plenty comfortable.

99% of the sierras in this site will out drive 99% of the patrols in the world with the right driver.

power is great to a point and then it just stanrts breaking shit.

You don't need 33" tyres to drive anything in the Vic high country either. Nor do you need hilux diffs.

You're basically outlining three different cars. An outback touring car, a high country car, and a capability car, but at the moment, you're only describing a build of the last car.

Custom built cars suck for long trips. I didn't think it had to be that way, but it seems like it is.

I thought I'd seen your name somewhere.

http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/general- ... elp-88048/

I think you should humour yourself for a minute, and follow the suggestions.

Guard cut on the front, 6.5:1 transfer gears, g16b EFI engine (and an auto box if ya feeling up to tunnel mods), chomos, lockers and tires 31 inches up, add power steer if ya feeling decadent.

Guard cut: sheet metal and welder

6.5:1 transfer: around $600 - $800

g16b, under 1 K for the engine start adding costs for tank (400? for coily tank), fuel pumps and adapters ($300?). Still the cheapest good option.

Chromos: 400 for the front, just under 300 for the back

Auto lockers around $250 a pop

Power steer $600 roughly for a jimny set up that BOLTS IN.

That comes in at $4300, + tires + cost of car. Thats a very amazing amount capability for that money, and will get you anywhere reasonable, and quite a few places that aren't.

that's the part i would like to know where are the best places to look for zooks? i would love a LWB but not sure where to find them i would also like a stockman body.
i understand where you are all coming from and in the case of the car being completely custom i don't understand how it can be that hard to work on a 4link front end are extremely simple and easy to work on iv been working on them for years and a simple fuel injected turbo motor aren't that hard to work on ether but yes OK il listen to your advice with engines. and i highly think an ifs front would out flex a patrol simply because i have one and with only a little lift and up the flex ramp i can drive it almost up to head height with out lifting a Tyre.
im not asking for anything apart from where can i find them for sale and is this even possible to achieve? i have built a few truck already and yes i have had the idea for a while, i like to build things different to what everyone else has simple as that. i just think it would be fun and extremely capable

I'll probably get shot down in flames for suggesting this.........

You are keen on 33" muddies, but if you intend to be in the northwest and seriously offroad, quote "spending quite a few months in the bush"- I would be running 7.50" x 16" 8 ply [or greater] tyres

Poke a hole in or tear up one of your flash 33" muddies in the middle of nowhere and you are stuffed.

7.50" x 16" crossplies are standard minesite, roo shooter and pastoral station issue- and can be found anywhere.
[often for a sixpack, sometimes a carton of beer]
They are tough and reliable.
The best we found for our bomb utes were MRF [made in India], we could destroy a set of the best tyres Coopers could offer in less than 2 weeks, the other name brands were not much better, while MRF ragtyres would last us months driving over razor sharp chunks of freshly blasted rock.
They might not have the bling factor of Coopers or the other name brands- but name is worthless if you are stuck trackside with dead rubber, and no tyre shop within hundreds of klicks.

Sogone's zook had those on it when I bought it. Looked tough too.

I say do it just the way you want. if that's what you want then build it

then if it sucks you can sell it off or put it back to what works

I hate it when someone tells me it cant be done, or don't do it (even if sometimes it does make sense)

BUT and this is JMO I couldn't think of too many 4wd vehicles id like to tour less in than a sierra ,be warned

Are you big or small? Big: go a stockman (actually cut down indian built style sides)

Small: you can fit into a proper metal top ute. I'd get a whole ute rather than dick around with body swaps.

Being in perth you may have to ship, I'd wait for a member from here to sell their car, that way if it has a thread you can see a bit of its history, problems and you can contact them easy to arrange an inspection or freight etc. AZers usually sell their junk at a realistic price too.

Gumtree or the Quokka but you have to be quick and cashed up as they are rare and well sort after so sell quickly. If you insist on 33's and Lux diffs be prepared to have it stickered before you get anywhere near the Pilbara.
