Hey guys what do you think of this diesel engine that was linked in a recent thread. The main question being would a turbo be something worth doing to get the figures up a little. I love the idea of a little diesel but the stats aren't super compared to say the g16b vit motor. If you were going to do the conversion then re spring the front to handle the extra engine weight, then it might be ok in standard form. I wouldnt recomend looking at the peak power figgures of the diesel. Look at the torque. Thats what youll be breaking things with. A turbo would mean youd be breaking things more freaquently. The torque comes in very early and torque is Newtons x metre. Pressure is newtons/m^2. So doubeling your torque output on the same gearset pots it beyond its desigh capacity by <edit> 200% where normally the national guidelines crack the shits at 120% over the original output

Hmm, I'm not sure that's going to solve much.
Sizing turbos to small diesels is pretty hard work - they have very narrow power bands and can be really average to drive is you're working them outside of their compressor flow area.
I drove a turbid 2.8 litre hilux engine with (the same) Garrett T28 turbo in two configurations - one had a very small exhaust housing which brought boost in at about 1200rpm, the other had a much more open housing which raised the boost threshold to around 2400rpm.
In a car with 32" tyres and 4.5 axle gears, highway revs were around 3K. With the small exhaust housing, the turbo was pretty much out of flow at 3K so throttle response was really doughy. With the large housing, there was plenty of boost and throttle response on the highway, but off road you needed to use the gearbox a heap more because not a lot happened under about 2200rpm.
Pulling a random "small turbo" off the shelf could result in the boost threshold being, well, anywhere really, and if it's not compatible with the engine's working range, you could end up with quite a dog.
This is on top of the other issues with a diesel in a Sierra - mostly related to gearbox strength, clutch life, weight, and gearing.

Good advice thanks peebs, hadn't really put much thought into driveline issues due to the torque or the rev range we may end up with. Looks like its back to trying to find a G16b in great nick and an vit auto to suit.

A torque converter is ideal for smoothing out the boost transition and boosting torque at the wheels when the engine is off boost. AW-4 (vitara 4 speed) autos have really tall overdrive 4th gears, ideal for getting cruise revs right down. Obvoiusly an adapted JRzook shift module would be required, and an arrangement of adapters that would likely do your head in, but an AW-4 makes far more sense behind a small turbo diesel than a sierra manual. I'm not seriously recommending it (it would be a lot of work and largely untrodden ground) but there are good reasons to consider this. Obvoiusly cost/weight/gearing and torque load on driveline are all still factors. Steve.
