Hi there,

I have recently purchased a 2001 Jimny with a blown head gasket. After pulling it apart, and taking it to the shop I have found out that the guy suspects that the valves are looking a bit tired.

My original intention was just to have the head re-machined and pressure tested, get a new head gasket and seal it up.
The estimated price for that is in the ballpark of 3 to 4 hundred.

Now that i have been informed the valves may need replacing, I am looking at about $400 plus for the just for the valve job.

i am a student so i do not have tons of cash to spend on fixing this car up.

Which brings me to my question,

How difficult is it to remove, re-sleeve, and and replace the old valves?

As I am aware I need a few special tools for this job, reamer, valve extractor, forceps, valve sleeve press?

I feel somewhat comfortable with doing a head gasket myself, are valves that much additional effort/risk if done carefully?

Additionally, is there any place that anyone can recommend to supply a engine rebuild kit for a 2001 sohc 1.3l g13bb engine? I have checked ebay, and there does not seem to be anything specifying that the G13bb rebuild kits advertised will suit 2001 jimnys.

i have found a gasket kit but I am cant find any specific valve rebuild kits.

Any advice would be appreciated

thanks i have edited my post so i sound like less of an idiot.

also update,

the engine rebuild guys have informed me that that the head has gone a bit soft, (just slightly under the normal hardness that they normally justify rework)

In addition they came out and measured my block with a straightedge and flashlight.

according to them if you can see light under the straightedge it is a sign that the block has warped.

for putting the lot back together and regrinding the block they suggested that the lot could run up around 2500ish.

I'm just wondering does this seem worth it?

in the end my refurbished engine will have a mostly soft head,

Am I just better off to get a new / used engine? g13bb's seem pretty scarce on ebay, there are a couple m13as for around $1300

i've been looking around to see how difficult it is to do a conversion to a M13A, and there seems to be different info out there as to whether or not it is easy/difficult/impossible.

After looking a bit more i have found a bunch of info regarding rebuild kits for g13bbs for swifts,
does anyone know if these will work for jimnys?

Buy a 2nd hand motor you could probs get one for 200 or 300

I'd find a 1.6 and get the conversion kit and you'll be far better off than rebuilding your motor and also same cash in the process

Do you know if i would need to swap my ecu and wiring harness etc? from the looks of other posts it seems you do, but most of the other posts seem to be for slightly different engine mods.

My main concern is trying to source parts and whatnot as my current jimny being a soft top seems to be pretty "special :| ".

New update to the story.

I have now pulled my motor out, and am considering doing a 1.6 conversion,

but low and behold I do not have a G13BB as stamped on my vehicle's engine info sticker.

Instead i just have the regular G13B.

It seems i do not have the cam sensor just below my gearbox, as do most of the soft tops do.

could this one already have had the engine swapped out of it?

I think the soft top Jimny's were made in Spain by Santana and the engine might well be identified as a G13B rather than BB. No matter, the engine is the same. (I think I remember reading the G13B thing about the soft tops once)

I agree that there is no point putting lots of money and time into a tired G13B/B whatever. I'd go looking for a G16B from a Baleno, and swap your manifolds and/or cam sensor if required. Use a BenT kit.

You'll love the extra torque.

You can also buy new heads for around $500, if you didn't want to spend a great deal on it.

Interestingly enough the vehicle plaque says Santana motors, yet at the same time the engine block has "MADE IN JAPAN" stamped on it. I thought that the Santana did the motors too?

Maybe I am wrong though. Afterall Im probably one of the newest suzuki owners on the forum.

I'm just glad that everyone has been so helpful with my questions.

I can't wait to hit up Stockton when this is all sorted!

AFAIK all Engines come out of Japan.

yup, No worries, I have checked with Suzuki apparently everything is normal.

Looks like i will be lining up a vitara g16b replacement motor for about 1550 ready to drop in.

hopefully all goes well with the registration process in Nsw. im banking on the fact that the jimny has a deisel 1.46 so therefore the largest motor available for the car plus 15% validates a 1.68 maximum engine size non engineered.

anyways,

you may struggle with legality of a vitara motor as it will be older than the car.

you should be able to pick up a G16b from a baleno cheaper than that too, i paid 800 for my latest one from a wreckers. they came from 2000 onwards cars so should easily find a legal one.

well the motor itself is only 1100 but i'm adding new belts waterpump etc. also the mounting kit is about 150 included. I had thought that this one was going to be from a 2001 vitara, but thanks for mentioning it, i am definitely going to check now.
