I've had a clunk for as long as i can remember, when i drop the clutch and even sometimes when i let it out slowly and accelerate. sounds mid to rear of the car.

Any idea's? thought it may be something to do with the transfer case (reduction gears), rear driveshaft, rear diff and just thought of the front driveshaft, front shaft sits very very close to a tubular chassis cross member.

I got a sound like that in my rear diff, sounds like an auto locker when taking off.

it could be anything down the line... cracked transfer mount, worn uni joint, worn diff center, twisted axle/s...

Great.... Cars only done 45000km's. I know it's not the the transfer mounts because I had that all apart a couple of weeks ago. I'm putting it down to play in the rear driveshaft, when you try to twist it by hand it moves a little.

If that is the case it should make that noise if you pump the accelerator while driving. ie getting on and off the power in quickish succession.

Check all your unis. I had the same issue and it turned out to be some worn uni's. Also the slip joint on the tail shaft can wear. I would actually take the prop shaft out and inspect the uni's.

From just visually looking at the rear shaft there isn't anything noticeable, i was concerned that with lifting the car your recommended to use a spacer in the front shaft and not the rear :?

the last time i had a clunk like this it was twisted rear axles (they were the original ones from 1992 so they did well to last till 2012 with my abuse!) - the twisted splines were creating more play than normal which was noticeable when grabbing and turning the driveshaft with the car parked in gear. I was lucky to get mine out when i did too, as they were twisted by about the amount of 1 spline or so and had hairline cracks forming, so it wouldn't have been far off breaking completely.

I've had opposite results from twisted splines ^
They end up being tighter than normal.

huh, weird - maybe its loose to a certain point then starts binding up again as it twists more? (or vice versa)
