Take off the cover and put it in 4wd and see how close to the body it is. Does it only do it while say going down a hill under no load and using the engine to slow you down?

Could be the bush is perished.
Pull the lever out an see if the bush is in good condition.

it has enough clearance on the body, and ive also noticed that it has a habit of actually jumping out of the transfer shaft selector, and into the opposing selector, for example when placed in 2wd and moving it to selector 4wd it comes up and jumps over to the 4wd side whilst still in 2wd which then involves me pulling the covers off looking down and trying to stick it back in i think im missing a spring or spacer?

When you pull the covers off do you notice this little item - If you do, Chances are all your need to do is put it back into place by pushing down (there is a spring under it) and turning clockwise.

The part that is worn is called a shift lever sheet, it sits under the ball on the shift lever which is held in buy that collar pictured above. I believe you can still buy them from Suzuki spare parts or look online.

It's the bush under the lever in the case. It's an easy cheap fix. Here's a hint don't just buy one they are about $10 each or thereabouts. Buy three and keep the others in your car so when out on the tracks and your mates have issues you can be the champ and provide a fix.
