That is a much better option with some TSOR radius arms to correct castor angle is a much better optoin IMO.

I know coils and springs are two completely different setups, being coils more difficult to lift with more issues

issues that all these "lift kits" should fix..... should, dnt donno excatly how much they actually fix it  ...... the bigger they re the more components brings to replace

but every time that a new jimny owner says it want to get something bigger than the 2" lift, lots of ppl complain bout it, when most of them re running big lifts too
:P

if the kit brings everything we need to lift the car and fix all the issues, whts the problem with getting it?.... sadly we cant have bodylift, so we need other source of lift :P

either way, is interesting the topic of how much/lack flex difference with the 80mm/4.5"

and would be good to see someone running this kit, just to see something different out there

still think is bit too big for me, but again still got no money to mod my car, so in the mean time Im still studying my options fo wht to do
:helloo:

How come a jimny can't have a body lift?

I am pretty sure that jimny airbags are triggerd by deceleration and not chassis deformation so body lift will have zero effect on airbags.

Ah ok - mine is a 99 I dont think it has airbags so I probably dont need to worry about it anyway as I am putting a 2 inch B/L in it. Thanks for the info.

I have 3" coil and 2"body with 31s, love it! All jimnybits, so far have broken a shock mount which I just welded on and added more steel to make sure it didn't happen to that bit again, and have shattered a rear diff (clay hill with step ups and following a patrol that made it nice and chomped up)

As for height.... It's great if you can choose a line that suits a car that doesn't mind lifting 2 wheels on the same side....
The PO had my jimny on its side once that I know of and I have been that close more times then I want so have a look at where you are driving befor you lift and make sure you can take lines that are not going to make you roll over, or add bar work to cope with the inevitable roll.

The jimny flexes real good (coming from a fj40 with over rated leafs)

And I read somewhere in her about gearing (didn't read the 5 pages)
I have 24% gearing and it is fine dependent of driving style, the jimny has a very low stall range so even if it is starting to sound like it is stalling on a technical section don't slip the clutch 9 times out of 10 it won't stall and that extra 1 time... I'd rather stall then ride the clutch

I was refering more into the legal side of things, as bodylift are illegal with airbag cars as far as I know.

not that the 3" or 4.5" are too legal either hahah

Yes, you might be able get that kit engineered. What's required will depend on the state and the requirements of the specific engineer, but it won't be easy. As it sits, it's illegal and requires rework to be eningered. That's not negative, it's a fact.

I've been involved in the engineering of a Calmini kit. It required crack testing of the welded components, which required removal of the powdercoat. Interestingly the heim joint bracket on the kit I tested was actually cracked, so required weld repair and subsequent re crack testing. New fabricated parts require examination to AS1554.1. I'm not convinced the arms in that kit would pass without rework. I'm just being negative though, it's not like I examine and test welds for a living or anything. In any case...

The Heim joint was not permitted by the engineer we used, which is fine, because it doesn't have sufficient travel for the suspension anyway, so we made (and crack tested) a ball joint spacer that the engineer was happy with.... which is interesting because...

The heim Calmini use is of poor quality and develops play very quickly.... as heims do in road driven applications. Hmmm. Those engineers don't know anything though.

Anyway, it may well be a pretty fraught and expensive process to cert that kit, on top of an expensive kit from the outset, with expensive shipping, that doesn't allow a bigger tyre than stock without further work. Sorry if that's negative.

In any case, on what universe does a panhard even require a heim joint? By their very nature, panhards see a very small range of motion. Heims are used on race cars because of their precision. There's no good reason to use them on the panhard only on a lifted 4WD. They don't last in a 4WD environment, so why would you use them in an application where their strengths ( precision and range of motion) aren't required.

I was staggered at how small and tightly bonded the panhard bushes are on a range rover panhard, but they don't hurt travel.

There's a clue to why this kit runs heims. It's not that hard to spot - the website for this vendor is in black and neon green. This guy is mad to be hardcore, and heim joints on your suspension are totally hardcore. It doesn't matter if they are required or not. They're totally xtreem

It wouldn't be hard to fix though... for more $$$ you could buy some adjustable panhards and throw the heims away.

Aftermarket brake lines have to be made by an approved manufacturer. If you have a brake line made, it will be recorded by the manufacturer and the approval number will be on the line. if it's braided it must have a PVC sheath over the braid and its approval number on the line.

I'll reiterate, just because you can buy a part, doesn't make it a good idea.

Rikstr - I love to see good parts and good fabrication, even if the application doesn't float my boat. I have no interest in winch challenge off road racing, but I find the fabrication and ideas fascinating. a 4.5" lifted Jimny isn't fascinating, it's a bad idea.

Steve.

PS if you're going to buy this kit and run it without engineer approval, it's no less illegal than body lifting an airbag equipped Jimny so you can actually run a bigger tyre.

I am not very familiar with all the different lift and mod options for the suspension - I have been looking through as many posts as I can on here - the difficult thing is so many people have different opinions you get confused which way to go. Are the Jimny Bits kit the same as the ORA ones? http://www.jimnybits.co.uk/shop/jimny/s ... d_442.html so you would say that the heim joints (if thats what is also on the jimny bits kit) are no good on either kit? and if so who makes the kits with the components that you suggest to use so that I can have a look at them and try to wrap my head around it all.

Thanks for all the info so far

Nice zook! We have 5" lift, AVO adjustable shocks and 5" springs. With correct caster bushes, radius arms and weird enough putting a winch in the front we have a very good ride and handling out of it now.
Got the springs custom made at Dobinsons.
