Hi guy's.

I've just been reading up on a few engine mods and a heap of different combinations that can be done to the G16b but I was wondering what modifications are worth doing?

Would it be better to stick in an aftermarket cam or do the DOHC conversion? Turbo charging is a different can of worms all together with the possibility of about 200Kw but what is the most reasonable and cost effective mod?

What are you going to do with the car first, lower it and make it a cruise machine doing burn outs everwhere maybe Race it.
Or do what we all do use it as a 4WD and have a reliable car.

200Kw out in the bush or off road ain't gunna help you at all just get you in a lot of trouble and breakages.

What age are you.
Reason gives us an idea of if you are just starting of or you have a bank roll

I'm not after 200kw to get through the bush, I was thinking of sticking in an aftermarket cam to give it a little more torque for towing but then read about the DOHC conversion. Both would net just as much extra power and got me thinking what would be better. I'm just seeing other peoples opinion on what's worth while.

btw im 29yo and my tax return has come through ;)

Ok so you need extra power for towing will you be putting on larger tyres, lift, for off road or will always be on the black top.

I tow a camper trailer with my 93Estate and with 235's on the hwy and beach hwy sits on 100-110 ok till sees a hill but with the 215 it is fine on Hwy

Tax returns gotta luv em

It does have a 5" lift a set of mud tyres for funday's and 235's AT's for everyday sort of stuff. In a sense I want to counteract the power loss that larger heavier tyres had taken away as well as help towing about 300kg worth of boat and trailer + camping equiptment and yeah sometimes I feel like getting out to push once it hits a hill.

I've ruled out turbo because of reliability, A single aftermarket cam costs about $500-700 But I can find a GTI head and have it serviced for about that.

a mild cam would be ideal along with match porting of the inlet & exhaust manifolds. don't forget to match port the gaskets otherwise it's a waste of time

If you want extra Torque the GTI head is a waste of money. It will get you some more power, but it will all be at the top of the rev range, which is useless for towing.

I'de go a good exhaust system with a mild cam and maybe a snorkle and just live with the fact that you have a baby little 1.6L motor.

GTI head flows less than the 16valve apprently :)

decent exhaust and cam will give some go and something to spend money on, whats wrong with a turbo, well setup they are perfectly fine

Nothing wrong with a turbo setup, besides initial cost, reliability, higher maintainence, The cost of a turbo, manifold, cooler, piping, ECU, And with a turbo comes it's inherent issue's like heat, tuning, cooling.

Reliability, well just means having something else to go wrong. If the turbo needs rebuilding or replacing there's another few hundred bucks and another weekend spent under the car. If for some reason it overboost's, Pop go's the weasel. Turbo's need fresh clean oil to help them last so 5000km oil changes and premium fuel is recommended.

Don't get me wrong I love boost, but then also comes internal work to make it more reliable and able to run more boost. Get it right your laughing, something bad happens you'll be crying. I know this path all too well and don't want to go back.

General rule of thumb, the more you stuff around with something, the more unreliable it becomes. If you're just after a bit more grunt for towing, go the camshaft option. Couple that with matchporting of the manifolds, going up one size in the carburettor jetting, and a decent exhaust system, you should have a fairly noticebale increas in power and torque.
I you want to go a gti head, then you will also need gti injector manifold, wiring harness and ecu + dizzy angle drive. It's a lot of stuffing around for what you say will give you the same sort of increase.

As far as I know all the 16v sohc heads are unlike other 16v engines in that it is a variable style camshaft (or marketted a a tri-flow camshaft by some companies). The lobes on each inlet valves are different to increase turbulence and torque. The only problem is that these lobes are tiny to start with, as the g16 is made for torque, economy, better emissions and not power.
The other problem is the manifold on SPFI are shocking and the mpfi have to be match ported as they are always out of whack from casting.
Next extractors and definitely camshaft with increased lift and duration on the primary at least. Try Tighe cams and make sure they are surface hardened.

However the best bang for buck is boost with LPG.

Impco 225 or 200 suck through with water injection.
At 7psi youll have a very reliable unit if you idle for 30 seconds before shutdown.
