G`day,
Has anyone grafted a solid diff into a GV? I have been thinking hilux simply for the availability of both diff`s & parts, down side`s, But to mention 1 is loss of turning circle. which makes me thing along the line Jeep Cherokee ( i know i should`t ) as thay already run coil`s & same stud pattern.

Anyone have any input?

Cherokee sounds like a lot less work given the stud pattern and coil mounts are already there.

ToNgEh from here is in Singapore and is currently putting a hybrid Sierra front diff under his GV..
Send him a PM or maybe he'll see this thread and reply.

I was thinking bout spook, as it is i`m smash`n thing in the front diff region every time I take it out, spook would be weaker again.
Maybe my right foot`s to heavy, still has the turning prob of hilux tho,

first problem will be what will you do for steering? next the late cherokee's have a different stud pattern and you will find they are not wide enough, and hilux's are alot narrower than gv's.

Hi joeblow,

Steering would be from the donor car, if a box has to go in & loose rack & peanut steer then so be it, I had a feeling lux maybe to narrow

I`ve thort of that, as joeblow pointed out width will be different , both front & rears would have to go in.
Upside of that, I could get an LSD rear & then if stud pattern is changed, I`d fave the same all round.
I`ve seen what can happen with unmatched ratio`s.

I assume your eyeing off an XJ model Cherokee (made 1984-2002, 1994-2002 in Australia). there would be a few issues with the diffs, first off the front is a LHS drop, not RHS drop like the GV. the standard front suspension is a 5 link job, and I don't think its good enough to swap into another car (on road manners are quite good admittedly, but it has really short arms). The front is a "Dana 30", the rear is a "Dana 35", both with very high 3.5:1 diffs factory. what size tyres you looking at running? as the D 35 has a reputation for not liking large rubber in the Cherokees, and most people who run large rubber on them get a "Dana 44" rear out of a TJ Wrangler, so you would be better off getting a pair of TJ diffs anyway; but then you still have the LHS side transfer output issue to resolve.

Off the top of my head, I'd look at a IFS Hilux rear with a '79 series cruiser front, or something similar. Still a massive amount of work, but more suitable than the Jeep stuff, and it won't hurt when you pee

that`s the sort of info i`m look`n for, the swap is a fair way off as I only have 1 car atm, as for the amount fab work, i`ve allways been of the opinion that anything can grind, weld & bolt in.
Snake racing have brackets that will save me heaps of time to .

P.s LHS diff no prob, it would`t be the first time i`ve cut & shut diff housings.

since you are in qld have a talk to an engineer first before you do much more. They can help you in the right direction and avoid any costly mistakes......

to make a traditional steering box work on a grand you will have to cut down the height of the front chassis rail. this is in an area considered to be part of the crumple zone. an engineer may not pass modifications in this area.

At the moment i`m just throwing the idea round, I should just get a sierra again as a toy, leave the gv as a tourer.
