Not sure if it's just a result of a few hot days, but i've got a new noise happening in the drivetrain. A quick poke around and nothing seems out of the ordinary, and no smells after an hour of running errands. It's only happening in second, and third up to 3000 RPM, and push the clutch in and it disappears too.

Any guesses? If it's a clutch bearing, is this something I can fix in my driveway?

push the clutch in and its gone, makes me think the throw out bearing may be the culprit.

Whatever the noise is it seems to come and go. Just went for a drive up to the shops and heard nothing... earlier it sounded like a bearing ready to explode.

Well, if it makes you feel better, I have a whine from the driveline with my foot off the clutch, in or out of gear, moving or stationary.

I also get a massive rumble with the clutch in.

Som'in gun' die.

I had that same kindof noise in my cruiser, I was told it is one of my cv's only made the noise when the hubs were locked, it was a really unhealthy noise too.

It's coming and going. I heard it again today, but not as bad as yesterday.

I'm due for a problem - the car has been rock solid since I got it on road. Guess i'll wait for a giant fireball to throw out the side, then i'll get on to fixing it.

The noise is pretty regular now. Couldn't tell you if it's a bearing but very much a dry metallic sound - seems to disappear above say 50kph. Gear selection is getting pretty stubborn in 1/2/3 when the car is warm but the clutch cable is properly adjusted. I'm also getting an underside 'tink' every time I apply a bit of throttle in second and third. A quick grab of everything underneath and nothing is loose in the drivetrain. I can't seem to isolate the noise, but it doesn't seem to be coming from the back. Clutch is only a 18 months old and hasn't been in mud or water. Clutch cable is maybe a year old.

Sound like a familiar problem to anyone?

whats the oil look like in the gbox?
sounds a lot like the throw out bearing still.... a bit.

did you do the clutch yourself?
whoever did the clutch, did they actually replace the old throw out bearing?? (some dodgey bastards dont)

failing that it may be a rooted bearing on one of you countershafts in the box, (but usually wouldnt disappear over 50kmph)

is the clutch slipping at all? and is it adjusted for free travel and such correctly?

I had the clutch replaced 18 months ago. I didn't do it myself and can't recall if the guy replaced the bearings at the same time. But clutch cable adjustment is fine - if I knock from clutch in/ gear in to neutral the revs don't change, nor is it creeping forward on a level surface, nor is it slipping. I last adjusted it maybe a month ago, but maybe it's stretching out with a long run on a hot day. I dunno. The gearbox stiffness seems to be an issue that comes and goes - today it's been an absolute pig.

I'll have to check to gbox oil - i've not checked it since an oil change about a year ago. It's not leaking so I assume it's OK. Maybe the selector bush thing is shot - i'll pull it open for a look. But it's not a grommet making this awful noise.

yeah, usually they would replace the bearing at the same time (as it comes in the kit with the clutch and pressure plate) but for some reason i have witnessed so many times, that some mechanics just choose/forget to/choose to forget to put it in.

im hoping thats your problem, are you running bigger tires and no gears? as i chewed threw a new exedy HD clutch in 11 months from running 31s and no gears, so if thats the case dont be surprised if thats the problem.

or i could be very wrong, im not the best at diagnosing, especially over the interwebs!

hope it helps you a bit.

It's not the throw out bearing, the sound goes away when the clutch is pushed in. Throw out bearing doesn't make any noise when your foots off the clutch, even if it's completely fucked or out of place. It only makes sound when your foot is on the clutch.

Does it make the noise when the car is stationary or only when moving?

Check your gearbox, transfer and diff oils for metallic particles and of course, the correct quantity of oil.

Check your unis. Pull the tail shafts/jack shaft out and feel how stiff they are, don't just do the shake test.

It's extremely unlikely to be anything to do with the clutch.

That's what I want to hear Sideways.

New round of oil going in everything tomorrow so we'll see if that works any magic. Uni's - no idea how to pull them, but a good look over (and a youtube vid or two) and it should make sense. I can't explain the low gear bearing/metallic whirring noise - hopefully just low oil (and nothing else). But the 'tink' seems to be drive shaft related - like something slightly loose is pressure locking in place with a certain amount of torque. Or maybe even an unseen crack and the 'tink' is the crack adjusting under force.

I'll report back in 24 hours.

Pull the tailshafts out by undoing the 4 bolts at each flange. The flanges will probably need some persuasion with a hammer to separate. Just take the whole shafts (or even easier, the whole car) to a mechanic and get them to put new unis in. Doing 20 year old unis is a bastard of a job and a mech will have it done quick as. Make sure the unis are in phase when you stick the shafts back in.

Tink is unis I'd say. They do that when they're dry.

The dry metal noise only happens when moving. Seems mainly to happen in second and third gear. It might happen in higher gears but wind rush and exhaust noise limits my ability to critically listen for drivetrain noises.

Jeez i'm glad I replaced the oil - 4 litres came out, 6 litres went in. Gearbox had sweet FA oil and that which came out was grey. Thought I replaced it a year ago, but that must have been my old box. Guess I can pencil that in for an overhaul sometime soon.

Booked in to get the uni joints fixed on monday (two are shot).

good work mate,
oil topped up and good oil hopefully will make the difference,
could have been a dry bearing on one of the shafts.

keep an eye on it it mate.
