I want to go down the road of improving my diffs soon in my coily sierra. Any ideas for lokkas or lsd's etc...

Any ideas or if you have something please let me know.

Would like a cheaper alternative to air lockers

Just save a bit more and go the air locker. It's cheaper than going through all the other one's first.

Hi.

I have a mini-spool in the rear, and a Lockright in the front of my 91WT Sierra.

I am happy with the spool in the rear, but the lockright is a pain in the butt for me. When Lockrights are setup correctly they can work OK, but it can be a 'hit and miss' affair. I had mine setup by a "professional" diff place, and they have got it very wrong, and it hardly ever unlocks (which is BAD in the front).

You can drive a Sierra with a spooled rear as a Daily Driver, but you need to adjust your driving style a little to suit (ps- it's not legal).

I will be leaving my spooled rear as it is, but removing the Lockright from the front and fitting an ARB Air Locker as soon as funds permit.

I got my spool from http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com and the Lockright from http://www.rocky-road.com

I am fairly sure that the above will fit in a coily. Please correct me if I am wrong.

So I am with kenn on this one - save for the air locker and you will never look back!

as far as I am aware the front diff on the coily is dfferent..the rear s the same as the wt,but the front is upsde down and reverse cut(the gearing)not sure f it affects the installing a locker...but worthh checkng out

having just put an air locker in the front, i wouldn't want anything else... the rear is soon to be air locked also.

no have only just started to look into it..went to suzisport today and he's going to start looking around for some gear for me..apparently you need a few certain bits to go together to make it all work

there was a fair amount of coin involved.... i had the whole lot put into a steel housing in the front of my vitara

$300 = arab compressor
$1060 = arab rd88 locker
$500 = 5hrs labour, including full rebuild seals, bearings etc buy a diff dude..

the arab's wanted $383 for a straight install... ie no new parts.

i did a diff ratio change at the same time & everything needed to be mixed & matched into the steel housing.

sorry joe, i had an arb sticker on my zook that one of my mates had put an extra "a" in there with a magic marker.

it took me months to see it.

i am running a richmond lock right in the rear of my coily. i did the install myself and hardly notice it on road, when parking it plays up a bit sometimes but it is not that bad.

you cant get a locker for the front of a coily without modifying it. i would get a second diff centre and weld it up and have a spare set of front axles and cvs

I too put a richmond lockrite in the rear of my leafy (DD).

After all the hype and bitching and moaning about auto lockers, I decided to try it anyway.

I did the install myself, and don't have any complaints. Maybe 1 tight corner in 10 it plays up a little and I look like a learner driver riding the clutch doing bunnyhops. Otherwise it is great.

At times it can be a little unsettling, as when it locks it can cause the car to kick/step out slightly.

Benefits, the car is less prone to wander and cross winds, the car feels a lot more rigid. Aswell as the locking for off road capability.

Having spent so many years on bikes used to them kicking around and twitching under power, I guess I was used to it anyway. I find it is still a breeze to drive even with its quirks.

$400 for a lockright vs $2000 (air comp + locker + install)... the $ saved goes a long way on zook mods, especially when I only paid $3100 for my zook.

Putting a locker in the front is last in the priority list, mainly due to running 33.4" OD tyres i am expecting to bust a lot of the front drivetrain if i dont upgrade everything.

i don't think that there is a lockright for the front diff of a coily.
the seppos didn't get the coil sierras.

there is no locker that fits in the front of a coily, unless is is modified to fit. i have heard about it being done with air lockers, i don't know about an auto locker.

install is pretty easy, they come with clear instructions to follow. take pics and have plenty of clean rags and lock tight to put it back together. the most important part would be to count the number of turns it takes to undo the carriers. the ring on the outside with all of the holes.

Well i have two lockrights in my sierra, actually make that only the front as of today, i have had a whine in my sierra that i thought was a rear leaking wheel bearing but after replacing the shagged bearing noise still there!
Took my car around to a diff specialist, the guy who install the lokka's into my centres and he took it for a drive and said yep rear diff, pinion bearings or even the gears!!!
So i took the centre out yesterday and took it around too him, he put his paint/dye onto the gears and gave it a spin.
And the wear was evident, so i needed new crown and pinion gears
He said that the lokka is the cause and they prematurely kill gears from his experience.
New gears with bearings is close on $1000, so ive opted for a secondhand centre which i installed this arvo, with no locka.

I can say that i have not done alot of kilometre's with these in, but the combination of original diff centres that have done over 240,000kms and then lokka's they havent lasted very long.

So listen too the guys like Kenn and joe, coz its true that your better off saving for air lockers, the costs in the end would equal a airlocker.
