I have just acquired an LJ80 ute which I am going to use as a paddock/farm ute. I think its an LJ80, it is made in Jan 1979. The transfer seems to only be high 2 and high 4 with nil low range? Four speed gearbox, with a bigger donk by the looks of it as the distributor cap and leads sit on top of the rear of the engine and rub on the underside of the bonnet.
No FWH's, I suppose they weren't an important feature in those days. Very rough, and rusty, but hopefully with a few patches it will give a few more years of abuse.

Is there any inherent problems or anything in particular that I should check or know about?

Whatever the motor, it runs well.

Cheers,
Ted.

For starters, they're called LJ81s. :P

To get into low range, go into high 4 push the stick as far as possible to the passengers side then towards the back of the car. That will get you into neutral then low range is below that.

If it's got an F10a it'l have "F10a" cast in big letters on the block above the starter motor. The engine number also starts with F10a.

LJ front ends are semi floating, it's not possible to fit free wheeling hubs with that setup. You can bolt Sierra hubs on though.

Check for rust in the front body mounts and the chassis around the rear spring hanger (fixed end). Mechanicals are cheap and simple to sort out and rarely go wrong.

Pics please!

Sorry about the 'leave of absence' guys. Been real busy. I have a couple of pics, but not of the engine.

Sideways, you are right about the chassis rust in front of the rear spring mount. The passengers side is real bad, but should be an easy fix. Just a new piece of channel welded in I reckon.

Brakes need attention, and steering box is real sloppy.

I hope to get it home within a week or two and start work on it.

Cheers,
Ted.
