Hi,

Just got my Jimny registered yesterday and while driving it along the highway this morning I could hear and feel something hitting the floor right where you put your feet on both passenger and driver sides. I've had a look underneath the car but due to the area around the gear box being so minimal I am unable to feel around the top and see if anything is touching. has anyone experience similar problems and if so how did they go about fixing it?

All help greatly appreciated as it is concerning me if it is doing any damage and is annoying to listen to.

Also, I don't know if this is related but the front squeaks when i shake it side to side.

like a radius arm bush?
shock bush?


get under the vehicle and get someone to rock it to make the squeak and pin point it from there.
hang off the exhaust to see if its got flogged mounts like mine as it hits the floor.
try and bench press the gearbox to check the mounts for play and slop, same same for the transfer.

hang off the drive shafts and give them a shake to feel the slop in the unis.

pop the bonnet and give the engine a shake to feel if you have a stuffed engine mount.

jack the car up and place on some jack stands, check the end float in your wheel bearings and king pins.

IS IT AN AUTO?

once its cool, jump under the car and throw your arms around the gearbox like you ar giving it a bear hug, feel for anything loose or foreign between the gbox and tunnel. i once had a bit of plastic guide post stuck there and it would make a horrible scrapping noise, took me weeks to work it out, took 15 seconds to get it out.



are thhere any vibrations or shakes, harmonic wobbles associated with the knocking noise??
if no, you can rule out most of the steering components and most spinning components (drive shaft unis etc)

without to much of a description and without being able to go over the car, i reckon the knock may be the exhaust.

let me know how ou go.

Well I know what my mission for tomorrow is. I will definitely get under the vehicle tomorrow and see if there is any movement in the transfer and the gearbox mounts as well as the engine mounts. Will also check the exhaust mounts.

My jimny is a manual.

No vibrations or shakes etc. that I knew of apart from that squeak which I only noticed as I got home and I can feel something hitting the floor but then again this is the first time I have been able to actually driven it on the road (has only been driven on my half acre block at home) as it was only registered yesterday so I'm not sure whats normal and whats not.

Will definitely give your suggestions ago and see what I can find. I will report back on here if I was able to find anything or not.

Well I've checked between the tunnel and the gearbox but cant feel anything abnormal. No slop or play in the transfer or gearbox mounts. Exhaust doesn't seen to be the problem either. I giund that the sway bar was making the squeak. I did notice however that I think my passenger side engine mount is screwed. It has a large gap at the bottom but touches the top where as the drivers one is even.

that could be you knock.
shake the engine, does it seem excessive?
get someone in thee drivers seat, get them to start the engine and give it some quick short stabs of the go pedal.
watch the engine, does it shake and twist excessively?
if yes, replace.



also the knock can be caused by a dead shock absorber, just bounce the car a bit and make sure its not sloppy like a bowl of soup and a dead shock isnt making the thump/knock noise.

Not sure about the engine mount but if that is not the source of the problem I wonder if the previous owner had a breather on the top of the transfer case. Is it still there? It might have come off and be floating around. Bit of a long shot but might be worth checking.

I will definitely check that tomorrow. Any bit of help I can get is helpful. The noise sounds like something is constantly hitting the floor non stop. Can hear it while driving it on the road and can feel it slightly on the floor.

does your car have a bull bar or plastic stock bar?

I know you said there's no movement in the transfer, but lay under it and push up hard. The mounts are very weak and when they break the front shaft hits the floor. Moving the case side to side won't show it, and you need to give it a fair shove up to move it. Speaking from experience
