I just got a 1998 Grand Vitara but it only has one key and one remote for the alarm/door locks. Anyone know how I go about getting a spare? - The nearest dealer is 350ks away. Are there any non-genuine ones that will work?

Wouldn't a dealer post one?
Don,t know about coding it, but thats shouldn't be too difficult to find out.

I have been told that if you get one from a dealer they have to code it? I don't know - I thought someone here might.

You can try this website... If they don't have one they should be able to source a replacement and post out to you New Remotes Australia

I thought the early GV Immobilizers could not be replaced ? I thought they were coded into the unit fitted to the car ?
The one in my XL-7 cannot be replaced the whole bloody lot has to be ditched..

Just before i bought my GV, the immobiliser died, it wouldnt allow it to start at all, they couldnt fix it, so an auto elec bypassed it, and wired it so when the key is out, it does what an immobilser does anyway, so i never needed my remote again, i can use it to open and lock the doors, but i just use the key all the time now... you can get a new remote from Suzuki, but its an expensive and drawn out process... i remember a thread here about the ones with the remote as part of the ignition key, and it was an expensive pain in the ass to get a new one made up...
