Hi guys,

Got a problem with my Vit 1.6 16V G16b.

It started to sputter in Idling and when accelerating one week ago.

Changed plugs, no difference. Found however one plug not used after I test run it. Checked cable by laying the plug on the engine block while running. Sparks seem good. So, do not expect coil, cables, etc. to be the problem.

Thought might be the injector, but the exhaust fumes smell as if a lot of gasoline inside.

Any other idea/tip what to check?

Thanks

Michael

Swap the plugs, swap the plug lead, swap the injectors, check the distributor cap for cracks, check compression.

One last thing - I don't know how deep the plug tubes on those engines are, but I've had misfires like you describe caused by arcing from the plug leads across to the tubes, which will not happen when you lay the lead on the head outside of the tube - that particular vehicle baffled quite a few local gurus and I only figured it out by accident - I had the bonnet open late one evening and because of the darkness I could see the arc.

but only change one thing at a time or you will not know what the issue was.

Okay, swapped plugs. Plugs are fine, swapped the leads. Lead of the cylinder in question is working fine in another cylinder. Caps seems fine. No cracks.
Rest, will try on the weekend at the moment not much time. Looks like a complicated job (for a beginner) to swap the injectors. Wonder, if I should bring it to a mechanic, who knows what he is doing.

You could try unplugging the injector (on the cylinder that's not firing) and use something like a noid light to see if the pulses are reaching the injector. (You could probably make your own noid light cheaply - try Google.)

At least you'll then know the electrical pulses are getting to the injector-> before you go the next step and break fuel lines to swap the injectors.

I was using a stethoscope to listen if the valve would open and close and it seems that is fine, too.

Ok gentlemen, wanted to close the file on this and give you a feedback. Found that one injector was not working properly. Might have been dirty or faulty. Was not interested in finding that out and replaced the unit. Now all is back to normal.

Thanks again for your help to find the problem. Appreciate it!!

It's probably worth getting the whole set of 4 injectors cleaned and tested.

Get the dead one cleaned and tested too, you might find it comes good with a good clean.

Those injector cleaning mobs do a great job, ive given them some aweful looking injectors and they have come back in perfect working order.

Good idea. Will do. They take the whole car and clean online or only the injectors?

The few times i have done it I have used one of those mobile injector cleaning mobs.

And they take just the injectors, put them in a machine in their Van, and it takes about 30mins.

I actually got it done at work once, pulled the injectors out at smoko, he came about 11am, and I put them back in at lunch time.
