Hey guys,

My sister-in-law has a SWB Vitara '89 and it has this weird thing going on.
When you turn the steering wheel left or right, it make the idle jump to about 2000 rpm Very painful offroad, you can't just idle around cause it takes off everytime you turn.

I have it for a bit to clean it up and I drove it to work today and pulling into the carpark was a scary event.

It also has a small "flatspot" in the carbi, when cruising it is fine but when you start to back off the throttle it will chug like the ignition was shut off for a second and then it is fine. another weird one.

Would these be related?
Does anyone know if there is a solinoid that controls rpm when the steering is under load? If so where on the carbi is it?

Any ideas?

I am presuming that the carby is similar to the sierra carby (but i dont know if it is) There is an electronic solenoid on the carby that will switch on when engine is put under load. You can check if this is the same by turning the heater fan or head lamps on. Get some one to do this while running and you are looking at the carby. You will / should see the solenoid moving. then it is just a matter of adjusting the screw that the solenoid touches to bring the revs down...

But vitara may not be the same as sierra???

EFI Vitaras have a sensor in the powersteer pump that adjusts idles speed up when there is enough pressure on the pump..
I'm not sure if carby models have the same but it's worth a look...If there is a wire to the PS pump try removing it and see what happens.
If that fixes the problem, then as stated above, try adjusting the Idle up solenoid.

I jast asked her about the headlights and she said it sometimes does it then too, we might have found the culprit, I will check this weekend.

my 1.3 carby dose the same when you put on the parkers the revs jump up heaps. never new why it did this till now. but never bothered to have a look why it did. might give me somthing to do this arvo.

You will find a lot of cars with powersteering do it. My old work van did it, my new cruiser does it and the missus' old pulsar did it too.

What does this do? Does it imply that when there's enough pressure the engine should not be in idle mode?

At idle the engine could stall if enough load is on the pump. The idle up function just maintains a healthy idle speed (usually only lifts revs by 200-300rpm.

100% correct, a/c p/steer, thermo`s, if the ecu notices a sudden drop in voltage, eg head lights turned on, ect ect ect

Its fixed, I found it was missing the adjuster screw for the idle up acutator
