Hi I'm new 2 auszookers and was wondering where I could find any info on what needs to be done to get hilux front & rear diffs into an 84 Suzuki sierra? Any help would be appreciated

The long and the short of it is that the hilux front axle won't fit with the narrow track front spring spacing an 84 Sierra has.

You'll also really need a Bundera (or custom) rear housing or the rear driveshaft angles are super weird.

as to whether they make a sierra any better or not, that's open on lots of debate. Depends on where and what you are driving.

Thanks Steve & stewy.. Steve I'm putting a v6 commodore engine & auto with a hilux transfer case bolted up 2 the auto using an marks adapters kit.. And that's why I should hopefully be right with tailshaft position/angles.. From the few quick measurements I've made I'm sure your right about the front spring spacing being to narrow for the hilux diff... Is there any one that has moved the spring mounts or made alterations to the diff housing to make them fit??

Thanks Steve and stewy.. I'm putting a commodore v6 engine & auto in the Suzuki & fitting a hilux transfer case up 2 the auto using a marks adapters kit.. So the tail shafts should all line up with the hilux diffs.. I've only made a few quick measurements Steve & ur right about the original spring mounts being to narrow for the hilux front diff so that's why I'm trying to see if any one has done it and made it work?? The rear diff will go in reasonably easy with moving the spring saddles. I know a lot of ppl don't think this conversion is a good one but I've put a lot of thought into it and its what I really want to do with it.. I've already bought the diffs, transfer, engine n auto etc .. Everyone's help is much appreciated

This is an example of where a more detailed question by the OP would make the answers more accurate and helpful.

If you are able to fit a commodore V6 and hilux transfers, I would have thought outboarding the spring hangers would have been easy. You'll want stiffer and longer springs than off the shelf sierra front, and to retain weight distribution, you'll probably want to pull the front axle substantially forwards, so fabricating a chassis extension is almost mandatory with this conversion to have a drivable car from what I have seen.

Why not just start with a hilux?

Not trying to flame, but other than a chassis you will have to modify the absolute shit out of, and a body I assume there wont be much left of, whats the point? There's no suzuki left.

Personally, spend the money upgrading a set of WT difs, and have fun with a sierra the way its meant to be had fun with, haha.

Buy all means, i'm happy for build diversity, I just dont understand why anyone would pick a sierra, and turn it into a hilux, when you can just buy a hilux.

Looking forward to the "Hi-como-zuki" build thread :)

Many years ago it did some stirring on outers.
I wrote a sig with " for sale sierra LWB ute conversion, spoa, hilux diffs, diesel conversion" and a link to a photo- which was a picture of an 85 hilux.

Not everyone got the joke. :D

Anyway, I've given up fighting the good fight. If the op thinks a commodore motor is cool good on them. They didn't ask me whether I think it will make their car better.

shit stirring aside, for what intended purpose are you building the rig for?
Assuming no engineers cert and it will be obviously illegal (due to SOA), so street use will be limited.

Out of what you are suggesting, the perch mounts are probably the easiest thing of the whole build to get right, the first time. If this is an issue you are concerned about you may need to reconsider things.

Have you considered any other issues associated with going to SOA?
i.e. track bar, and correct hi steer etc along with the other associated issues mentioned by others of getting the weight sprung and distributed correctly.

Then you will have raised the car at least 4" due to SOA, and have changed the characteristics of the car, but it will look and sound tough (in the eyes of many people), if done poorly it will be a total piece of crap or get parted out 1/2 way through your build.

For what you are planing, it is a cubic assload of work to get right, I don't see how the benefits outweigh what you are losing.

Take a look at my build thread to see pics of how a SPOA is done, (mines on sierra diffs but with hilux leaves) - see if it puts you off or not =)

To clarify what exactly im doing... im putting a commodore v6 with an auto transmission with a hilux transfer boted up behind it using a marks adapter kit, ill be also fitting front & rear hilux diffs with e-lockers in both and sorting out suspension/ steering components to make it all work...No offence to the ppl that don't think the conversion is a good idea or I should buy a hilux but i didnt ask if anyone thought it was a good idea or if its what you would want to do! "Its what I want to do!" I like the short wheel base sierras but they lack power/ torque etc etc... The car has been in the family for over 16 years and holds a sentimental value even if there won't be much left of it lol... I've had a lot of fun in my zuk how it was but now I want to change it for the better "In my opinion". It doesn't worry me how much time or money it costs I just want it done and done right the first time which is why I asked if any one had info on how the hilux diffs have been fitted before... So please only comment if you have any info that could help.. I have only bought all the diffs, tailshafts, transfer, engine, auto so far but hope to start the conversion with in the next month

According to his profile oldmate is in QLD, so SPOA may not be entirely out of the question.

LWB sierras have the joy that they can be catagorized as light trucks, and thus it can be engineered under a whole fuckload of other perameters. There is also the fact that hilux diffs are "designed" to be SPOA, so if legally modified into a sierra, it may reclassify it and allow it to be SPOA. Dunno, you would really have to talk to an engineer.

Basically, the heavy vehicle modifications work off of widths, lenghts & heights etc, so it makes it a little easier and you can get away with abit more.

Inb4 a sierra isnt a light truck: I dont argue that but i have first hand experience in getting a my last LWB plated this way.

The biggest issue with SPOA on lux diffs is the height - lux diff tubes are bigger than sierra, so you get more lift there right away vs. SPOA on zuk diffs.

IMO - design your perches and shackle hanger to give more "low" :

Image

^^ thats a bit dodgy IMO - but you can crush tube and run the top pin through the chassis so you don't have to notch it - and you'll save about 50mm in height on that end of the spring, plus its impossible to invert a shackle =)

I would be looking at coils.
The commo motor is going to kill leafs unless your track bar works spot on.

How long is your rear shaft going to be

I imagine he was after help with his question and not the usual frothing at the mouth and hysterics that happen whenever someone mentions lux diffs or commodore V6s.

Tommo85 to lower it a bit you could look into an upside down shackle mount like the US Ford Ranger and others use this will have the added benefit of helping clear the front pumpkin as well. I have never seen them in action but perhaps Steve might know how well they do or dont work.

Thanks every one for the help! Does anyone know if there is any companies like "low range off road" in USA in Australia? They seem to have everything you could ever need for a Suzuki!
