thinking about turbocharging my vit. just wondering if anyone on here has done it/put up a build thread. I'm thinking or going a t25 blow through set up on a standerd 8v with webber carby running small boost maybe 5-6 pound and putting a thicker head gasket in. anyone done it? any recommendations? any positive input would be appreciated. i had a look for a thread but couldn't find one maybe i was looking in the wrong places?

cheers

I know I'm representing the Fun Police again, but it'd be cheaper and more reliable to just go to an EFI G16B than a blow-through set-up for a G16A. They'd end up being similar in power and torque figures in my view.

If cost is not an issue and it's more for the fun of the build and to learn/break/rebuild stuff, then go crazy.

Plus, if the intention of the thicker head gasket is to lower compression to allow for the turbo and prevent detonation, this will adversely affect power and torque in the range that you want it for an offroad vehicle.

But then again.... RACECAR!

yeah its more for for fun and learning. at the same time i don't want to be towing it 2 or more hours from home. whats the go with fitting the efi g16b? same mounts/ gearbox/ transfer ? and a bit of wiring?

Used to have a blowthrough carbie Gemini with a sc14.
Would never do it again. The performance was nice, but tuning was a nightmare.

These days, forced induction = fuel injected. Anything else is not worth the headaches.

Only blow through carb setup I would consider would be a blow-through, quad CV motorcycle one. Still a bit of mucking around but they have been very well proven on the turbo bike scene. In comparison a weber carb is pretty much a vaguely metered dip feed carb

I don't like to do unnecessary extra work, so if I wanted an EFI vit I'd just go and buy an EFI vit and swap over my suspension and good bits. That said, the conversion would be a lot less work than a blow-through turbo setup huffing through a webber.

I'm really contributing nothing to this thread. I say throw a 6/71 blower on it and post burnout pics! Armsup

cheers, might have to have a look into a g16b efi. my problem is i live in adelaide and there isnt much or a market over here for vitara engines and wreckers.

but all up just to turbo it parts tuning cam, fuel set up and 2 bottom ends owed him mid 5k
made 160rwkw on 10psi I think it was, did go really well I must say haha Image

did he do the work himself? thats fairly costly and that's a fair bit or power im not chasing big numbers i just want a bit of extra get up and go and somthing a bit different from the norm.

Most the metal work eg cooler pipes exhaust dump pipe and manifold was done by him for cheap or nothing

It is costly to boost something, he didn't think it was going to cost that much but it all adds very fast, and it was pre short lived. But Was on stock bottom ends with copper head gasket and good fuel set up tune head work but still at the end of the day it needed bottom end built to be reliable and still have have fun in it :D

Maybe you can do it on the cheap but it will not last or be any good power wise or drivability, IMO

did he run bigger fuel lines and a surge tank ? and did he lower the compression or was it just standerd pistons and head gasket?

Was running a copper head gasket can't remember what mm
Wabro in tank pick up pump to surge tank then had a 044
boost referenced blow through carby fuel pressure regulator. Yeah new high pressure fuel hose and lines ect
Weber 32/36 DGV carb
High flow cross drilled needle and seat Solid polymer fuel float and a k@n carby hat
And was tuned by a work shop

It didn't just blow up everyday he had this car turbo for over a year but did 3 bottom ends in that time, he drove it everyday to work and (when running) and he did give it a hard time to so that didn't do much for it life span

pretty much the same setup im thinking of doing. still got a bit of thinking to do though. i might do a sc14 charger ive been weighing it up. as much as i want a nice spool up and turbo sounds the charger seems to be the better safer option with less mods and better for 4bying with constant power.

I'd go a small modern turbo over an sc14.

Power delivery can be the same. Either option can be safe with proper management of AFR's. Amount of mods required for both are the same.
If you want "nice spool up and turbo sounds" you'll probably hate the sound of an sc14. ;)

Still, I expect it would be cheaper to buy a g16b on the east coast with warranty from a wrecker, freight it to you ($300). have it professionally installed.

theres no fun in a g16b. sc14 charger with a draw through set up? dont have to do fuel pump or fuel lines or exhaust should run a safe 6 pound with standard gasket with a good tune? 1.6+1.4=3L should do a bit better then a g16b maybe? im not sure what power a they put out?

I made a similar system on an old mini, and this would be the fun way of getting power from a G16a.
Time and money consuming, but fun!

I would just use the standard carb, make an inlet manifold that still utilizes the coolant temp to adjust the choke and runs a standard V belt. Retard the ignition. Run it on 98. Fit an oxygen sensor to make sure it's not going to explode and have some with with it!

The positives at the time for me where, no mucking around with seals blowing out of carbs, pressurised oil lines to turbos, exhaust systems, intercoolers or aftermarket EFI systems to waste money on if it didn't work as expected... But, mine turned out really well. And in the case of off road use would be great with the extra torque at minimal rpm.

6 pounds will get you around 80kw at the rear wheels.
How you manage to achieve the "good tune" will make or break the setup. I wouldn't attempt it without planning to invest ~$3k+.

ive got a mate who has done it. to a 4k engine. he is great with carbies done most things you can think of to a carbie engine. great with everything carbie. he has offered to help and has really good experiance. as far as fab work goes can do it myself and have people who have offered to help. as far as all the man hours goes its costless a few slabs here and there, tuning will cost nothing and i can get all tubing on an account. but i do expect to put a fair bit of money in. also going to box in the carbie anyway and run a snorkle for fresh air. i recon it will be fun and interesting to see how it goes. will have to wait a little bit but if anyones interested in seeing how it turns out i can put a build thread up? right up a costings list and put any information out there?.

1st one lasted good 6 or 7 months
He did look at getting a motor built just better Pistons and rods good set of bearings lower comp throw some good rod bolts and head studs ect and O-ring the block ect but just moved on had he's fun with it.
