My SJ70 1996 sierra has idling issues, when first started when cold idles smoothly but once it warms up idle drops and starts idling rough and acting like it just about to cut out.. dont want to play around with carby yet, thinking it could be plugs or the coil, any advice?

Does it backfire when you engine brake downhill? If so, could be that the auto-choke has gone?

If not, there is adjustment on the carby for warm and cold idle. Its been ages since i looked at a sierra carby though i i've totally forgotten where they are, but i'm sure someone will chime in with a photo.

You could remove the air cleaner pipe off the top of carby when cold. Start it up and let it warm up. Watch to see if the choke butterfly is opening up from being closed.

Is it stalling or just rough idle?

What about stalling when you take your foot off the pedal while driving?

The two adjustment screws are only a temp fix, something else has started this. To raise rpm when cold the screw is hidden under the accelerator arm on the carby, rear of carby, engine off lift up the arm to see the screw turn in to raise rpm. Start car when cold and check rpm, turn off to re adjust the cold rpm. This can only be done when its cold, you have a 2 minute window before the choke comes off.

To change the hot idle the screw is on the rocker cover side of the carby. Its in plain sight and its not the one lower down that cant be turned by screwdriver. Only adjust this if idle is too low with hot engine.

Other things are vacuum leak, replace all the hoses one by one, even the tiny u shaped ones you cant see from the top.

Idle valve blocked, rocker cover side with two wires coming off it. Remove and clean with carby cleaner. Dont lose the washer and the two wires twist up when turning this.

Blocked idle jet, its inside the carby and can only be cleaned by pulling carb down. Quick fix 1. Remove carby pipe off top of carby, place rag over carby inlet, carby will backfire, repeat 5-6 times to blow and crap out if the jet.

Quick fix two, swap leads 1-4 or 2-3 and with air cleaner pipe off it will backfire when revving engine.

Check your leads too - i had similar once when my leads were failing, and it only did it when the engine warmed up.
