Hi Guys I have recently rebuilt my second sierra engine (1.3) the first one was a 1L.
When I rebuilt the first one It ran extremely hot after taking it for a 2 minute drive. I got it timed by a mechanic and it fixed it perfectly (Was too far advanced)

Now I finished rebuilding my 1.3 yesterday and I timed it myself, it was running fine didnt get hot or anything, got the mechanic to come and check the timing incase and he said it was 7 Degrees out. So he fixed it up, now it is running really hot after a 2 minute drive, could he of put it out of time? I am yet to replace the thermostat since the head blew as I tested it but I will replace it tomorrow incase.

What degrees btdc did he set it too

I believe he tried to set it to 8Degrees, he was using a painted mark on the crank pulley but im not sure if the painted mark was inline with the keyway.

Yer well that would be worth checking but 8 degrees is right and have you checked your cooling systems health

The cooling system is fine I havent replaced the thermostat yet I tested it and it was fine but I am going to replace it tomorrow anyway

Define "really hot" How many degrees C water temp are we talking?

also. if you do replace the thermostat - replace it with genuine suzuki. Genuine thermostats jam open when they fail rather than jamming shut and overheating the motor.

Where the hole sits doesnt matter, make sure youve got the bulkier side of the thermostat (the side with the spring) facing down though

No they don't they are all the same that the stupidest thing ive ever heard.

my last thermostat that died was genuine and it had stuck open - i bought a new one from suzistore and mentioned it to them and they said that's what the genuine ones do when they fail (get stuck open)... but whatever... his choice what thermostat he buys.

Same with my zook it still had the original and when it died it was stuck open

is the mechanical fan on the right way? make sure the ribs in the centre of the fan are facing forward and not backwards ...
another thing its fine to set base timing , but is the mechanical and vacuum advance working ? theres not many sierras that ive tested that the vacuum advance has worked on them.

cheers fixed it up running abit better now. could it also be running alittle more hot than usual if the tapepts are out?

Ok when you say rebuild, were talking a full strip and all bearings, seals etc replaced?

Yes tight exhaust valves will make the engine run hotter than normal but since you rebuilt it you would have done the clearances?

When you say hot, how hot in Celsius? Don't rely on the factory Suzuki gauge as a thermometer. Some run operating temp just past cold, some quarter and others like mine run on half shown on the gauge.

You need to have the car up to operating temp, pop the bonnet and stick a temp gun on the thermostat housing. This will give you a much better idea of true temp.

Let us know what temp she's at and where its sitting on the "gauge".

Be aware that the fan shouldn't make a whole lot of difference once you are moving. I ran mine without a fan for a bit and as long as I didn't stay still for more than about 5mins the temperature stayed "normal".

what temperature is normal and whats too hot for a sierra? when measuring the temperature at the thermostat

Did you get the carby rebuilt?
Are the jets in the right spot (i.e. didnt get swapped accidentally)
