Ok so been thinking over for a while about my rear axles. they are only stock items running 34inch swampers.
Has anyone actually busted a stock N/T axle? i have personally broken 4 or 5 c/p's and but never a axle! no one i know has ever broken one either.
so why is there such a huge push for everyone to run floaters? other than a better bearing setup.

I chose to run full floater in the back of mine for 3 reasons:

#1 - Reliabiliy:
I twisted a rear axle which also had hairline cracks in it - if it had let go out wheeling or on the highway i'd have been proper fucked. At least now if i should break an axle the wheel is supported.

#2 - Strength:
Upgraded axle materials plus the floating setup mean its way harder to twist an axle again.

#3 - Rear Discs:
No more mud wearing out the shoes, or water giving me a mushy feeling on the pedal. Plus now my handbrake works!!


It was by no means necessary that i run a full floating rear... i could likely have kept stock axles and they'd last another 4-5 years of abuse like the last set... but with the benefits above, and Joeblow offering them at such a reasonable price it was a no brainer.

I've had twisted and broken axles. Hate drum brakes. Hate doing semi float bearings. Never done a R&P in the rear.

Didn't you bust a bunch of center's in your white zook before you chopped it up? ?
Maby its a terrain thing?

I've lunched 1 R&P and Pinion also... but that we pre-floater... and i did a LOT of reverse recoveries on it (before i knew about the inherent weakness in the gears).

I think just the combination of rear locker, tcase gears and 31" tyres + a bit of bouncing around on rocks is all it takes. I'm much more careful now - and i have a front airlocker, so when i start bouncing i can flick that on and crawl up (usually without bouncing around!) or find another line rather than trying and trying until something breaks.

I've broken a Stockman rear axle, same size and spline, different length, with a 2stroke. Shockload in my case.

Not in the rear. I've had a rear centre fail, but nothing to do with lockers, gears or tyres.
But i went with the Vit centre when i did the swap too. Just doing full floating axles seems like half a fix to me.

the way i see it why not. they are cheap. Mine when i finally release them will be even cheaper.

I'm set on running a n/t rear diff so not as easy as buying a kit and bolting it in. Unless there is a kit available for n/t?
I'm just factoring in the $$ in a fairly budget build.
