Hi All,

My GV has had a problem with jumping out of 4WD ever since I've had it. I've been looking at getting the replacement parts for the transfer case for a while but between moving interstate, buying a house, having a baby, ect. I haven't got around to actually doing it.

In the meantime the gearbox has developed what sounds like a bearing noise (sounds a bit like that grumble a GQ patrol gearbox makes in 1st gear). It happens between about 1500-2500 rpm under load and is most noticeable in 2nd and 3rd. The sound seems to vary with the engine speed rather than the road speed, so I thinking it might be an input shaft or maybe an idler shaft bearing.

Am I going to be better off getting the gearbox bearings and transfer case parts replaced. Or just get a gearbox and transfer from the wreckers?

Your thoughts on any of the above would be appreciated

Hey there Gravity Powered, As we have spoken before on the issue of the transfer jumping out of gear, well, I replaced the whole t-case and it solved my problem.
As for the gear box, I would probably do the same, but I would be looking for an 2002 model box and t-case. There is a guy in Brisbane that I can put you in touch with if you decide to go down that track.
Where did you move to?
You sound like your in the same leage as me...new state, new house, new business, 2 new babies and the poor old GV just gets left out in the whether.

Yep, that is the one. Only one new baby though. I'm back home in Adelaide.

Oh, and I ran up the arse of a Subaru in the GV the other day, so it's at the crash repairers at the moment just to make things worse:oops:

Mugwui how much did it cost for the 2002 gear box (fitted) mine is a bit dodgy and think i will need a new one when i get back if topping up the oil dosent fix it

Those g/box`s are very strong, unless you ran it out of oi, filled it with water or sand bugger all goes wrong with them, there was a campain on the early ones but that was a selector fault.
As for transfer. the cog i told you about fix`s them & can be done in car.

It was only the transfer case that I replaced and I did the work myself, so it only cost me $275 for the t-case and a few bucks for oil.

I have only been out once since I fixed it, but it goes great. I need to drive it some more to give it a good working, but it seems to have fixed the knocking noise as well. Definatly recommend the up grade.
I was ment to call dj710 and forgot, but I'll send him a text to let him know.

Yes, I'm a bit surprised that the noise has appeared. I don't know the history of the car before I bought it with 75 000km on the clock. It has 125 000km now and I've driven it pretty hard but haven't done anything too harsh to it. I asked my mechanic to change the oil in the box and diffs at 100 00kms, but now I'm wondering if it was done and if it has been changed since new. I replaced it the other day with new oil + some morey's additive to see if I could quieten it down, but it hasn't made a difference.

Any Idea what kind of coin it should cost me to have new bearings put in the gearbox if that is the problem?

if you pull the box out, most gear box shop`s will do it for round the $1100 mark. not many will do just bearing`s as you have the box out & it the same amount of work to replace the syncro`s at the same time.
Pm dj710, I`m sure he has a complete box & transfer there.
that 1100 is box only & just a guess, some parts may only be genuine wich will put the price up heap!!
