Hi guys,

i am going to go look at a g16b engine this afternoon and need some advice. I will be putting the engine into a sierra as my engine block has a pretty bad tapping noise.

The G16b engine has been rebuilt at home apparently, the engine has been bored and decked by engine rebuilders. It comes with the full wiring harness and ecu but one of the wires is damaged and needs to be repaired.

My first question is, for $900 is this an alright deal?

Secondly, my main concern is the worry of it being rebuilt at home and there is no way of knowing if the rebuild was done correctly with no mistakes. is there anything i can look for when i go and inspect it and any specific question i need to ask?

lastly i have done a bit of research about the conversion into a sierra is there anything else i will need. I've read i will need an electronic fuel pump, vitara speed cluster and an adaption plate? is that about it?

I look forward to hearing from you guys

Cheers

Dev

Also the year single point injection vs multipoint, dizzy vs coilpack ect...
Maybe do a compression and leakdown test also

Is there any way of conducting a compression test and leakdown test if the engine isn't running?
i only ask this because im assuming the engine is out of the vehicle

It wont be 100%. But i always look at how the sellers shed looks, i.e. organised and tidy.... and if they have another project laying around, show some interest in it with an attempt to get shown around it... you will soon get a idea of their attension to detail and quality of work

Cheers pezz yes will do that, i suppose there's no real way of guaranteeing the engine is 100% without being able to start it, but will definatley keep an eye out of the blokes working environment.

I payed $1200 for mine. $900 is a good price.
Also check the oil. Dirty or milky etc.

any water in the oil (cracked head)will manifest on the oil cap itself before the oil will get milky. also check the condition of the spark plugs , they usually tell a story if you know what you are looking for.

$900 is a bargain for ecu loom and engine and in my books even if you have to spend another $1000 to get it in tip top condition then you are still ahead .

You want to inspect the block for cracks in the usual places .

To put it into perspective ...
Bore hone and deck $250
Pistons and rings $240
head skim $60
gasket set $220
big end and main bearings $110
timing belt and tensioner $95

over $900 there if the engine has been rebuilt ... thats even before a crank regrind ..

the questions id be asking if they have receipts for the parts and machine work , and why are they selling it so cheap ...

Cheers for the response guys,

went and checked it out yesterday the bloke was building a comp zook and just lost interest, from looking at the extent of work he had put into it I think im happy with the engine. Will be asking for receipts of parts and work done to it and will double check the oil. From what he was saying and what it looked like he wanted to do everything right the first time saving any hassles further down the track.

only other two questions I have that I have noticed aren't mentioned in the g16b build threads are the accelerator cable. the cable seems to be in a different place and looks like the stock cable will have to be lengthened in order to fit, does anyone know anything about this?

Also the EFI system, I will be looking at running an external EFI fuel pump and filter, I've heard you can run into problems if the pump isn't close enough to the tank? could anyone shed some light on this area? or give some tips or recommendations on what to use.

thanks again for all your responses
