Width. Different CV's. I don't like the strut setup, an upper arm would be good.
$$$ and skills. Or $$$$$
One day. I will make a new IFS setup in a vit. Increase track a bit, and Positive offset rims.

I've never taken much time to look over a vitara front end, I've pulled them apart but not much else. It depends how much you'd be wiling to pay for a system that works. I'd be looking at using a generic high travel offroad cv. I've got an idea but I'd need an axle for measurement.

Width would be helpful if you're searching for more travel, shouldn't really be necessary for strength. Obviously for the larger width you would have smaller cv angles and therefore you'd be running the cv in a stronger area. A new upper arm is possible, but again isn't really the point of this discussion.

Every Vit driver wants more travel, but are limited by the CV's. As you said, width allows safer angles. x2 on offroad CV's.

If you want more width you need custom top and bottom arms. Otherwise your caster and camber change is going to be miles out along with your bump steer if you just change the top.

Yeah. Isn't that the question?
How do you do it?

You model the current system, apply more width, fix the geometry to work and then produce I suppose. You'd be looking at new top and bottom arms, axles and tie rod. It'd be easier to produce a new spindle to suit the cv you could run a micro stub to suit the cv.
But seriously, you're now talking about huge amounts of engineering and parts. It wouldn't be engineered for road use which is a big turn off for most vitara users I would have thought?

Exactly. I think Vit owners need to let it be with today's traffic enforcement.
But as I said. One day i will do it. Start fresh. Add some width. Keep it appearing fairly ordinary, although highly illegal.

I plan to do the exact same to my NGV some day. Planning to use the stock mounts so it is a bolt on system that can be returned to stock.
So besides all that, there are ways to get much more cv strength with a little custom machining and no welding like the ranger mod.

Ideally what we need is a cv shaft that has larger and stronger cv's that will operate at a bigger angle that will bolt in. I know if this is made its most likely going to be for the Vit and be for the passenger side. This is not a huge problem for us GV owners as a Vitara bolt in Cv will work with a spacer on the passenger side and with the stub axle mod in the drivers side.

And what would you be willing to pay for that? Obviously the ranger set up can be done for minimal resources however dodgy it is. Has anyone got a passenger side axle that I can buy to have a play with to make a custom axle?

Gv must have huge plunge from the factory as they use the same diff as a vit but with wider chassis and longer cvs the outer cvs is easy just use a Sierra cromo cvs The inside needs new axle both sides with the new cv bolt pattern That way u r not loosing length Ur not going to get any cv with much more droop in the inner cv because u can't go to much bigger before it starts hitting things Any high angle cv will not have the needed plunge. Keator runs gv cv on his vit with longer arms and is getting 10in travel

be interesting to see if the internals of a Sierra CV will fit inside the CV cup from a GV/Vit..... if it does then its just a matter of getting some half shafts made with the correct spline.

Get custom shafts from Sierra cv to a heat treated stock inner. Or go old school and get a sleeve put on the inner

Mate had some spare CV's kickin around from his old Paj. Outters are about the same size as Lux Outters and inners are slightly smaller but still bigger than Vits. My thoughts are, use pajero bolt in CVs so you have a bit longer CV, grind the flange off and weld a vit flange on, cut outter and weld on vit outter. Spacer for driver side should be around 1". Pajero, GV, Pajero, Lux

That's still a lot of customising rather than bolt-in off the shelf spares...

What CV are you looking at using? I've found out that the driver side pajero cv is almost the same length as a passrnger se vit cv.

It will be a hybrid. I've got allowable dimensions and spaces allowed to fit easily. I'm looking for cv choices now, I've got some ideas but need to confirm dimensions. It's not going to be a chop this/weld that sort of conversion though, it will be all bolt together and hopefully with only one custom part for ease of finding spares.

Some of the latter info in this thread has got me thinking... but it did take me several reads of the CV plunge diagram post to get that so my thinking may cloud over at times.
In regards to the Hilux CV option: I do like the idea of having the stubby shaft flange made to fit Hilux CV's instead of straight Vitara and then an adapter plate. That would remove some 12mm straight off the length issue and perhaps negate the need for the Hagen Widening Mod. But in turn the long side drive shaft would need a similar modification - all things considered it is probably still simpler than the adapter plates. Even Hagen himself now prefers to cut and re-seat the spring cups / mounts instead of the HWM.
Sierra-dan's comment re an upper arm caught my attention as well - I have been watching the Calmini ESSDS thread on Zukiworld which is a bolt on upper arm. Seems to have just come through some customer feedback inspired design changes. This set up should pull in the camber that gets difficult to adjust out with HWM and help accommodate the width of the Hilux CV.
One more thing to add - our Vitara is in NZ and is fully road legal there. I understand the rules in some Aussie States preclude these mods? Especially HWM.
Somewhere amongst it all will be a series of options that become reasonably standard and well understood.

Im looking at doing very similar to what Bits4vits has done but will be using Pajero cv's. Will be a direct replacement for the drivers side of the GV.
