The Torsen T-2R RaceMaster is the only Torsen to have a preload clutch. So, even if a wheel is airborne, torque is applied to the other side. If one wheel were raised in the air, the regular Torsen units would act like an open differential, and no torque would be transferred to the other wheel. "
Torsens work well if you left foot brake them, which is cool with an auto and for short obstacles, but not much chop if you're trying to climb long hills for have a manual.
Dad used to have a H1 hummer that ran them stock. He ultimately swapped them for air lockers.
Not really. The rear torsen broke and rather than replacing it with another difficult to find torsen, Dad made the call to go with air lockers. When not broken, the Torsens were quite good in the hummer.

ahh yeh that changes things a bit. torsens would work great with electronic traction control to break the spinning wheels, but good traction control should theoretically make lockers and lsd's redundent.
I disagree with you 1000%. Lockers are inherently intrusive. Well tuned traction control can mimic a locker and also torque vector in a way that is fluid and dynamic.
Even many years ago it was possible to get traction control to act when wheel sped varied by as little as 5%.

old video 2:40 in is ETC. if you left foot break you can go slower anc activate the etc/abs which will apply breaks to the wheel thats breaking away. the advantage is your using standard equipment already on the vehicle.
So who has fitted ETC to their Suzuki yet instead of a locker or LSD?
AFAIK, it's still only a factory fit feature not available aftermarket, and only available on top of the range ($$$) "Big" 4wds. I do agree that the combination of ETC and LSD is a very potent yet unobtrusive combination, far smoother than an autolocker.
The Haultech guys were playing around with traction control on old Rangerovers back in the '90s and early 2000s. They ran diaphragm actuators on remote extra mastercyls, with a programed basic stamp from Jaycar as a processor and proximity sensors on the wheels sensing wheelspeed. They were using Trutrac diffs as well. Chuck still uses it on the front of his but everyone else gave up. A computer putting the brakes on while you're trying to drive wasn't really unobtrusive and still wasn't any where near as good as a locker.
Dave Camp's old TT has those brake cylinders in it. One for each wheel, but each is switchable from the cab.
I drove a lot of stuff unlocked with gearing that i could locked by left foot braking. However, manual made it difficult and only worked on slow stuff. I don't believe there is a substitute for 100% locked diffs.
I wasn't aware of how haultech set up their traction control. Sounds slow though.
I don't argue that for our application, lockers are superior. I was only disagreeing with the blanket statement that traction control is intrusive. It is in many vehicles, but it doesn't have to be- when you re dealing with torque vectoring you can't have the system pulsing like old school traction control.
Same as ABS. The best abs systems are almost undetectable. The Bosch system in the 05 STi I had was remarkable.

Oh yair it was slow, I guess it was meant to be slow, they did it more for slow rocky stuff. Just being pneumatic must have made it much slower than a hydraulic factory setup. Did a fair amount of huffing and puffing too, would have used some air. The more effective they made it the harder it was on diffs, axles and CVs. I've never driven anything with traction control so have no idea how it compares from the driver's seat.
a mate of mine has a forester and has setup line lockers on both front brakes has them on separate switches works well a bit awkward cause the gearing in the Subaru is a bit tall so a bit of clutch riding involved if he was running an auto would be better. but they totally transformed it off road being a all wheel drive with out a locking centre normally pick a wheel up and loose drive. when his budget permits he is gonna have a go at fitting them in the rear and just run 2 switches so it holds opposite corners.
